Hundreds of Orkut communities provide users with outrageous ways to rag freshers

Shocking but true! Despite a Supreme Court directive to educational institutions to curb ragging, the scourge is alive and growing not just physically but also virtually.

There are hundreds of communities on Orkut that suggests horrendous ways in which a junior/fresher can be ragged.

Communities of various colleges on the popular social networking have forums on which the members are asked to come up with "different and innovative" ideas for ragging. Ideas range from light-hearted ones like making a fresher stand on one toe to the sexually exploitative ones like asking a student to masturbate and ejaculate within five minutes failing which he must be paraded naked in the college.

Despite restrictions each year freshers have to face humiliation in various institutions in the hands of their seniors. Numerous cases have been reported in which ragging has led to the death of students but effective laws are yet to be put in place to check the menace.

Only four states Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and West Bengal have enacted laws to ban ragging in educational institutions. The Himachal Pradesh government is also preparing to bring a new ordinance to check ragging after a medical student died in the Tanda medical college in Kangra district due to brutal beating by seniors.

The student, Aman Kachroo, hailed from Gurgaon. A case of murder has been registered against four suspects. Angry reactions have been reported from across the country over the incident.

Netizens joined the country in condemning the excesses on juniors committed by their seniors and motivated hundreds to join Aman's family in a candle light march in New Delhi on Saturday at Jantar Mantar.

Thousands of netizens have made or joined communities seeking justice for Aman. Groups like For Aman Satya Kachroo the brother they took from us, Justice for Aman Kachroo, Let those who ragged Aman Satya Kachroo to death be hanged are motivating people to join the demand that the perpetrators must be brought to justice.

"Don't let this case die down without justice being done. Remember, anyone could be a potential victim. Ragging is very much akin to terrorism. These students terrorise the freshmen (freshers) because they can get away with it. We must fight this as yet another form of terrorism," a message on one of the communities said.

One of the members of justice for Aman Kachroo has posted: "It is really sad and heartbreaking to see that ragging has such an ugly face. The loss is irreparable (for the family). The accused students should be hanged. They deserve it."

Another member on Justice for Aman says: "We Indians talk of unity..ha..ha. The only time we stand united is the time when we are in a movie theatre that's it. Ppl plz at least once, get together and fight against unjust people...I ensure u we will feel great."

Cruel intentions

* Senior girls should ask juniors to strip to their undergarments with hands tied behind. Then fresher girls should be asked to pull down their undies and admire their bodies. * Five juniors should be called to a room. All of them should be made to strip. Then throw four coins in the air and ask them to catch the coins. Whoever loses out should be paraded naked around the college. * Junior boys should be asked to strip and go to toilet to masturbate. The one who doesn't come out with a sample of his semen in five minutes should be paraded naked. * Make the fachchas strip and ask them to take a shower with hot water in summer and cold water if it's winter. * Ask a boy to act like a raped girl and give a detailed account of her rape to her boyfriend (another guy).   The above are outrageous ragging suggestions from websites
