Recession's over Rs 32 lakh salary for DU students

By: Madhuri Balodi

Two undergraduate students from SRCC and St Stephen's offered jobs with salary package of Rs 32 lakh per annum each; all colleges see growth in placements, salary offers

Here is some good news for the recession-hit job market.

Two undergraduate students, one each from the Sri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) and St Stephen's have been offered jobs with a salary package of Rs 32 lakh per annum each.

The offer has been made by German-based Deutsche Bank.

The two candidates Aadit Mathur and Sukrit are Final Year students of Economics at SSRC and St Stephen's College, respectively. Though the duo refused to divulge information about their offers, one of Sukrit's close friends, on the condition of anonymity, said, "Deutsche Bank had come to our college for campus placements.

Rumours were rife that the bank had offered one of the highest salary packages in Delhi University's placement history. Interestingly, the placement scenario is much better this year than what it was last year.  Last year, around 25 companies came with jobs but this year the college is expecting more than 35 companies."

Good times are here: Students at SRCC say the number of companies coming for campus placements has increased since last year

Money, money

Apart from this, more than 20 Final Year students of St Stephen's College have received job offers from reputed multinational financial companies like McKenzie and Bain Capital. Four students have got offers of Rs 11.5 lakh per annum each at McKenzie, while four were absorbed by Bain Capital at a salary of Rs 7.5 lakh per annum each.

At SRCC, where last year the minimum salary an undergraduate student was expecting was Rs 2.2 lakh per year and a post-graduate student could look at Rs 4 lakh, this year, the figure has doubled. About 20 students from the college have already been hired by several companies.

Dr PC Jain, principal, SRCC, said, "We are not entertaining companies that are not offering good salaries. In this regard, we have already rejected the offer of two very good companies. It is expected every student of SSRC will get two job offers before January."

Jobs for all

Meanwhile, students from other colleges of the Delhi University are also hoping for good placement offers this year. While 11 undergraduate Commerce students of Hans Raj College were hired by VKS, an affiliate of the United Bank of Switzerland, with salaries of about Rs 4.5 lakh per annum each, 81 students have been shortlisted for interviews by Google.

"We are expecting a good percentage of Final Year students to be placed this year. There have been a few companies like Google who have conducted their initial rounds of recruitment. We are hopeful of placing all our students by January,'' said Divya Jain from the Placement Department of the Hans Raj college.

Institutes like Kirori Mal College (KMC), Daulat Ram, Hindu and Ramjas too have good companies lined up with jobs for students. Seema Parihar, placement co-ordinator at KMC, said, "The overall response has been fantastic this year. Companies have arrived for recruitment from all disciplines. However, the demand has been the highest for students of Economics and Commerce. A steep rise in demand for students from Physical Science and Statistics has also been noticed this year. The final placement results will be out by December or end of January."
