5 newborns die in AP hospital after 'failure of incubator'

By: Agencies

Five newborn babies died under mysterious circumstances in a government hospital in Vijayawada last night, triggering protests.

Parents of the deceased alleged that the babies died due to failure of incubators and the central oxygen system.

Tension prevailed at the old government general hospital, as irate parents sat on dharna, alleging that their children died due to negligence of the doctors.

Nine newborn babies are currently in incubators and the condition of one of them is said to be critical.

Doctors at the hospital claimed three babies died a natural death and an enquiry was on to ascertain the cause of the death of the other two.

The resident medical officer of the hospital, P Ramagopal, confirmed they were enquiring into the actual cause of the deaths.

District Collector Peeyush Kumar has ordered an enquiry into the incident.
