Muslim leaders in a multi-faith prayer meeting at the Trident Hotel yesterday appealed to the public to not tar the religion and the faithful with one brush.
The prayer meet, held in memory of the 26/11 victims, brought together leaders from Islam, Jainism, Sikhism, Christianity, Zoro- astrianism and the Chabad-Lubavitch movement.
It was organised by the Simon Wiesenthal Centre and The Art of Living Foundation.
Kill violence
At the meeting, Dr Khwaja Iftikhar Ahmed, founder of the Interfaith Harmony Foundation, said it was important to understand that Islam was keen on denouncing all violence, in spite of all the recent bad press the religion had received.
Echoing his sentiments was Maulana Wahiduddin Khan. "War in defence is acceptable, but not guerrilla or proxy war that is un-Islamic.
Violence begins in the mind and to reach a solution, one must first kill the violence present in the human mind," he said.
The meeting was followed by a candlelight vigil at Nariman House where Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg was killed by the terrorists last year.
"We will never forget the victims of 26/11 and hope that the victims here are the last ones ever here and anywhere else in the world," said Israeli Consul General Orna Sagiv.
