BMC to set up committee to ascertain condition of 58 bridges before it begins  repair work pending since 2007

The Kopri train tragedy on Friday should have put the BMC into damage control mode immediately.

Though the mishap drew attention towards 58 bridges in the city that need urgent repairs, the work has not yet commenced. In fact,  BMC officials say it will take another six months before repairs can begin.

S V Joshi, chief engineer (roads and traffic), said, "We will first set up a new committee to carry out a detailed investigation, which will determine the corrosion level and strength of these bridges."

The committee will comprise a private contractor and senior officials from the road department.

"In 2007, the Standing Technical Advisory Committee (STAC) had recommended us to appoint a  chief engineer for bridges, but we failed to get experts," said a road department official.

Based on the investigations, repair work will be charted. An official said, "It may take more than six months to appoint a contractor, carry out the investigation and take a decision on the repair work."
