Every monsoon, when they wake up in the morning, the people who stay on the hills of Saki Naka thank God they're alive to see another day. But yesterday morning wasn't like that for 10 people who died in Thursday night's landslide.
"We never sleep on the night it rains, as we are scared that we may die in a landslide," said Shyam Kanpate whose hut luckily did not slide. "We were lucky, but we won't be lucky always."
The member Dange family stay in a hut, situated on the hill's highest peak. "We do not have any other place to stay. We have been staying here for nine years and are now used to the fear.
Small stones keep falling from the hill, but this landslide has shocked us. We don't want to stay here, but there's no other option," said Nirmala Dange.
Officials at the site said the whole area is under threat, as there are several porous stones, with water continuously passing through.
Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, who visited the site, said, "We are looking into the matter and will try to find a solution for these residents."
