MP Prakash treated for intestinal cancer

Doctors will decide today whether Karnataka's gentleman-politician needs an operation

Former deputy chief minister M P Prakash is suffering from intestinal cancer and doctors at Manipal Hospital will decide on Monday whether he needs a surgery.

Dr  Shekar Patil, medical oncologist at Bangalore Institute of Oncology, who first diagnosed Prakash's ailment, said he was all right and required regular treatment.

"We found tumours developing in the small intestine and he has undergone chemotherapy," said Dr  Patil.

Survivor: Doctors say Prakash has recovered after chemotherapy

"There will be a minor check-up on Monday and that will decide whether the surgery is required or not."

He said he could not comment further as the Manipal doctors were treating him.

A source close to Prakash's family said the doctors had detected a small growth in the liver apart from the tumours and doctors would operate on him if necessary.

He said Prakash had been complaining of stomach ache for two years and the family thought it was gastric trouble. When the pain became chronic, they suspected ulcers but it was confirmed to be duodenal or intestinal cancer when he was brought to Bangalore Institute of Oncology three months back.

"Since then, he has been getting admitted for three days once in 15 days," said the source. "He has undergone chemotherapy and has now recovered."

Near normal

He said Prakash came home on Saturday after the stay in hospital. On Sunday, he had lunch and took a walk in his lawn at home near the Golf Course, something he couldn't do earlier.

Much to the delight of his family, he also resumed reading, one of his favourite hobbies, on Sunday.

He picked up T S Eliot's anthology and read The Waste Land.

"He was preparing to write his autobiography before he started frequenting the hospital and he is saying he has to resume that also," said the source.
