Speeding college student knocks down pedestrian at Girgaum Chowpatty
In a freak accident, a speeding Honda CR-V ran over a pedestrian near Girgaum Chowpatty last night.
The incident took place at around 12.30 am when accused Aditya Lalit Somaiya (20), a college student, knocked down Tipu, a Sion resident, who was crossing the road.
While the police have arrested Somaiya, the victim Tipu died on the spot.
"Tipu stays alone and is a resident of Sion, while his family is in Bihar," said a colleague of Tipu, who did not wish to be named.
Not drunken driving
According to a police official from Gamdevi police station, Somaiya was not under the influence of alcohol. "We have registered a case against Somaiya. He is booked under section 304 (A) for causing death by negligence," said the senior official from Gamdevi.
The officer added that according to eyewitnesses Tipu jumped over the speed barrier and tried to cross the lane when the car knocked him down.

This is the second such incident when a speeding car has hit pedestrians at Girgaum Chowpatty.
Last month, a speeding Maruti Swift injured seven people, including a woman, when the driver lost control and rammed into three taxis near Girgaum Chowpatty. |
