Cops wary of arresting them because they feign health problems when confronted
Alert passengers in a government bus, plying between city market and Bidadi helped police bust a pregnant women gang who were trying to flick a gold chain from a woman passenger on Saturday.
The gang has been operating in the city for the past few months successfully, but luck ran out for them when a passenger, who was about to be robbed caught the lady red handed and raised an alarm, following which other passengers came to her help.
 | | All the women are natives of Salem, Tamil Nadu. They confessed that they took up crime to support their families, as their husbands are drunks and unemployed | PI of Chamarajpet police station, Ratnakar MG, said, "It's very difficult to question them as they may level allegation and feign health issues. Hence, we have produced them before the court and remanded them to judicial custody," he said adding that this is how they make best use of their pregnancy.
The accused identified as Nadia (25) and Kavitha (35) both wives of Sundrey, and Maria (30) and Telaga (20) are wives of Raju, all native of Salem, Tamil Nadu.
The women confessed that they took up crime to support their families as their husbands are drunks and unemployed, Ratnakar said adding that they come to the city early in the morning to look for their preys. Once they get the booty, they waste no time to return, Ratnakar said.
Modus operandi
The gang, decently dressed in order to avoid undue attention gets into a crowded bus. They surround the prospective victims and brushing them from all sides frequently when the bus is in full speed, they flick the chain and pass it on to their associates behind. As the women are pregnant and cover themselves, passengers do not suspect them.
And if they fear being suspected, they pretend to fall unconscious or claim to be suffering from pain and get off the bus.
Police have found that pregnant women from the same gang were also arrested by the KG Nagar and Chamrajpet police officers earlier.
But fearing health issues, the women were sent to judicial custody, and the cops were unable to recover any item from them.
Rathnakar added, "Since the theft is committed while the bus is moving, cases will be registered in various places.
These women were around eight to nine months pregnant, so we couldn't take them into police custody and have immediately sent them off to judicial custody." |
