By: Madhusudan Maney

On Saturday around 6.45 am, an electrician working at the Metro rail site died on the spot when the on-site generator sucked him in. This is the seventh accident that has occured at the Metro rail sites since the work started and yet, none of the prescribed safety norms are being followed.

Radheshyam (28) who died in the tragic incident was from West Bengal. He was working at the Subramanyanagar Metro site opposite Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited (KS&DL). The generator fan sucked him in when he went to switch it on.

He was rushed to K C General Hospital in Malleswaram where the doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Pritviraj Shetty (24) who joined five months ago as Safety Supervisor said, "As the weather was too cold in the morning, Radheshyam was wearing a muffler around his head. When he switched on the generator, the muffler got sucked by the fan and his head was smashed."

"I got the news around 7.15 am and thought it was a minor accident but later I was shocked to know that he was dead. His parents were brought to the city by air and all the expenditure was borne by the company (Simplex Infrastructure Limited). Later his body was cremated at Harischandra Ghat in Malleswaram. His family will be getting around Rs 7 lakh as compensation from the company," added Shetty.

Subramanyanagar police station Inspector M S Sridhar said, "A case has been registered and the investigation is on."
