Chawl crashes; residents safe

By: Vivek Sabnis

A Portion of a single-storey chawl collapsed in Nana Peth late in the evening yesterday. No injuries were reported when four rooms in the chawl came crashing down -- residents of the one occupied room among the four affected rushed out when they heard the ceiling crumble.

Belonging to Dadamia Khan, the 90-year-old Islampura Chawl that was affected is one of the oldest structures in Nana Peth.

The occupied room held Azim Shaikh Gani (35), his wife Nazma (30) and children Sania (12) and Awez (10).

The collapse began at 8.30 pm and Gani was able to safely bring out his family and sister-in-law Shabana Abid, who was also in the room. About 120 families live in the chawl.

The fire brigade cleared the debris and stopped water gushing from a broken pipe.
