Gyaneshwari Express, Jhargram, Naxals, train accident

Hours after the Howrah-Kurla Gyaneshwari Express was derailed after Naxals allegedly blew up the railway tracks on the Sardiha-Khemasuli section, near Jhargram in West Bengal, relatives of those who were on the train were reeling from shock at Kurla station, where they had gathered to find details about the condition of their family members. Several complained that only scanty details were available. MiD DAY spoke to some of them.

Harilal Hansraj Gupta reached Kurla Terminus to check the names of the victims.

A vegetable vendor by profession, he searched for the names of his sister Prema Devi and his nephew Akesh Doa, who were travelling to Kolkata to attend his brother's marriage.

"I am unable to find their names in the list. All I could locate was their seat number," Gupta said. "I don't know what to do and nobody is helping me."

"When I woke up in the morning and switched on the television, I was taken aback to see the derailed bogies," said 25-year-old Saiful Gazi.

Seeing the destruction on television, Gazi ran into a frenzy as his brother Wahid was onboard the train with his two daughters Rakibul and Meena.

"When my sister-in-law saw the news, she fainted and after regaining consciousness she has been running a fever," said a distraught Gazi.

With tear-stained cheeks, he told MiD DAY, "Meena's body was found around 1 pm, but my brother is still looking for Rakibul."

"I don't know what to do," said a distressed Ajay Kumar, who was unable to find the details of his cousin Hameer Salwasay.

Salwasay  was on his way to Kolkata to meet his mother Asha Salwasay. Fraught with nervousness, Kumar said, " I am getting negative vibes and I am very tensed.

If I don't get any information about my brother, I will leave for Kharagpur myself."
