Police register a case of murder against Sahil Malik for strangling model Rinki Choudhary

Two days after small time model Rinki Choudhary committed suicide in her Goregaon apartment, the police have registered a case of murder against her boyfriend Sahil Malik. Malik had claimed that he was painting the bedroom walls at her residence when Choudhary went into the kitchen and hung herself from the ceiling fan on Thursday.

The postmortem reports helped the police nab Malik, against whom they have registered a case of murder and divulging incorrect information to the police.

Police inspector Surendra Paitankar of Goregaon police station said, "In a case of hanging, the marks on the neck are usually V-shaped, since the rope or dupatta gets pulled from the top. But in this case, the marks were around the neck. This proves that she was strangulated before she was hanged."

The 28 year-old model who had done bit parts in Hindi films, has family in Kolkata. They arrived in Mumbai on Friday on hearing the news. Their statement has been recorded. The family had suspected foul play and blamed Malik for Choudhary's death. They had alleged that he was financially dependent on her, and was forcing her to marry him.

In his statement, Malik alleged that the paint fumes were irritating Choudhary, which is why he asked her to go to the kitchen, following which she went and bolted the door from inside.

"At around 6 pm, a courier delivery boy came to the residence with a letter addressed to Rinki. Sahil said he went to the kitchen to inform her but she did not respond. When he broke open the door, he found his girlfriend hanging from the ceiling. He brought her to the drawing room, and splashed water on her face. When she failed to regain consciousness, he informed the police," said Paitankar.

Malik's ex-girlfriend, Shyamli Jain, a former Mumbai model currently based in Delhi, had objections to the marriage and had made calls to Choudhary over the past few weeks, police sources said. Jain was also summoned to the police station. According to the police, Choudhary did not want to marry Malik. She had been married and divorced before.
