Crime Branch to carry out parallel investigation to ascertain if attack was politically motivated

PICS/BIPIN KOKATE | Around 12.30 am, this morning, Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray was snapped outside Sujay Hospital in Juhu. According to reports, he had come to visit his injured relative. Payal Gupte (17), distant relative of Bal Thackeray, was attacked by an unidentified person outside Mithibai College in Juhu.
According to police officials, Payal was coming out of Mithibai college gate after attending a college festival at 9 pm. She was accompanied by three friends when the incident took place. She was hit on her head and back by a rod after which she fell unconscious. In an attempt to save Payal, one of her other friends was also injured.
"I don't know who is the accused and what was the motive to attack my daughter. But I am unsure if the motive is political. The law and order situations seems to be getting worst, as the police is still unable to arrest the culprit," said Payal's father, Pankaj Gupte.
However, it was learnt that on realising Payal's political lineage a case was immediately registered at Juhu police station and at 1 am, a man identified as Bachu Yadav from Nehru Nagar was detained.
Police claim that some students saw him near the college with a bamboo stick when the incident took place.
Apart from the Juhu police, the Crime Branch has also started a parallel investigation on the case, said a crime branch official on the condition of anonymity.
"Raj Thackeray was also supposed to visit Payal but when he heard that Uddhav was present at the hospital," he dropped the plan of visiting, said a MNS worker.
