A 38-year-old debt-ridden man who consumed poison following harassment from a money lender in January died at a city hospital yesterday.

Arun Gaikwad, a resident of Bopodi, took the extreme step after receiving threat calls from a money lender who had given the victim  Rs 5 lakh as loan. The Khadki police have booked the money-lender and his five accomplices for allegedly abetting the man to commit suicide.

Acting on a complaint filed by victim's wife Pradnya Gaikwad, the Khadaki police have booked Ashish Agarwal (27), Atul Agarwal (25), Rajendra Bansal (46), Sunil Bansal, Navin Bansal and Ajay Agarwal. According to Khadaki police Agarwal had levied an interest rate of 4 per cent on the loan.

"Arun used to borrow money from the Agarwals and used to lend the same amount to some of his employees at 5 per cent interest to get 1 per cent profit margin. He, however, failed to repay the amount in the last few months. Ashish and his other accomplice then started nagging him for money and threatened to kill him," said a police officer.

After Arun had consumed poisonous substance on January 7, he was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was undergoing treatment till yesterday.
