The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) yesterday arrested former Congress MLC Kanhaiyalal Gidwani and his son Kailash, for trying to influence CBI officers investigating their alleged involvement in the Adarsh scam.
To police custody: Ex-Congress MLC Kanhaiyalal Gidwani
Apart form Gidwanis, the officers arrested their own advocates, income tax lawyer J K Jagiasi and Mandar Goswami. Jagiasi allegedly asked an Air India (AI) official, one of the accused in the case, to pay a bribe of Rs 50 lakh in exchange for diluting charges levelled against him. The petty cash books maintained by Jagiasi helped unearth the conspiracy.

In addition, Rs 25 lakh was allegedly paid to Goswami. He was the Special Counsel in the Ministry of Law & Justice and at present is working as Retainer Counsel for CBI. According to CBI sources, the tainted AI official approached the CBI for dilution of the case filed against him.

A trap was laid and he was arrested on February 20. During interrogation, the AI official revealed that had approached other accused, including the former Congress MLC.
CBI in its remand note presented before the court alleged that Jagiasi entered into a criminal conspiracy with Goswami, representing the agency in Bombay High Court for diluting the case.
The note further stated that Jagiasi had approached Gidwani and his son Kailash, and asked them to cough up Rs 1.25 crore for diluting the case against them, to which the father-son duo yielded. The CBI has booked the quartet under Prevention of Corruption Act. A special CBI judge remanded the accused to police custody till March 16. |
