BEST driver crushes 65 year-old's leg
Passersby claim the driver was driving rashly; victim's condition critical
A visit to the temple turned tragic for a senior citizen from Ghatkopar on Saturday when a BEST bus knocked her down, severely injuring her left leg. Sixty six year-old Gayatridevi Sharma was returning home after offering prayers at a temple when the accident occurred. According to sources, the BEST driver drove the bus over Sharma’s leg despite her waving to stop the approaching bus. Sharma was undergoing a surgery at the time of going to press.
Sharma, a resident of Ghatkopar (east), regularly visits the local Ram temple around 11 am.
An eyewitness saw Sharma crossing the road when the bus, coming from Ghatkopar station, approached from the other side. Though Sharma waved her hand to warn the driver of the bus, the negligent driver drove the bus ahead knocking her down and running over her left leg.
Bystanders managed to nab the bus driver and thrashed him before handing him over to the Tilak Nagar police. Vaibhav P Kamble, the 26 year-old BEST driver has been booked for rash driving.
Sharma was immediately rushed to Rajawadi Hospital with a bleeding leg. Doctors at Rajawadi attended to her injuries but asked the family to take her to a bigger hospital after which she was taken to Zynova Heartcare Hospital, Ghatkopar (west). Sharma was kept in the ICU until evening before she was taken into the operation theatre for surgery.
Dinesh, Sharma’s son, said, “My mother was taken in for a surgery around 8 pm. It is unfortunate that such an accident had to occur when she was returning from the temple. Her condition was still very critical when she was being taken for the surgery.”
Officials from Tilak Nagar Police Station confirmed that the driver of BEST bus has been arrested. “The driver has been been booked under Section 279 (Rash driving or riding on a public way) and 337 (Causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of IPC,” a police officer said on condition of anonymity.
