Youths kill 55-yr-old as he scolded them for wasting water
A 55-year-old man was strangulated to death by two youths in the wee hours of Monday after he had scolded them for wasting water while they were taking a bath at a municipality tap in Kothrud.
The deceased has been identified as Balu Hanawate, a slum resident at Rambaug Colony in Kothrud. Police have arrested the two youths — Pinto Sahane (19) and Rambabu Patel (24) — both residents of the same area.
According to Kothrud police, the two accused would frequent a public water tap to take a bath in the morning, and often waste water by leaving the tap running. Hanawate, miffed with the water wastage, had been reprimanding them since the last eight days.
“In the wee hours of Monday, the accused came to the deceased person’s house, and following a verbal argument, strangulated him to death,” said Mohan Kalyan Vidhate, police inspector at Kothrud police station.
Police suspect that infuriated with scolding and abuse meted out to the two youths for wasting water, the duo might have strangulated Hanawate to
death. Baby Hanawate (30), the deceased person’s son, filed a complaint in this regard stating that both Sahane and Patel had killed his father.
In another case, officers of Crime Branch Unit-IV yesterday arrested four people for murdering a 23-year-old bus driver, Manohar Nimbalkar. Nimbalkar was found bludgeoned to death near Janjira Hotel in Lohegaon area.
“Prima-facie it looks like the murder was the fallout of a previous enmity between Nimbalkar and the accused. We are, however, now investigating the case and hope to ascertain the exact motive,” said Police Inspector Arun Walture of Unit-IV.
The arrested persons have been identified as Umesh Maruti Gawde (21), Satyanarayan alias Akash Dattatray Gawli (19), Ankush Shantaram Gote (21) and Rohit Vinod Agarwal (21), all residents of Bhosari.
