Drunk mother fails to register minor's kidnapping, rape
Grandmother finds the four-year-old lying motionless on a mound of debris by a riverbed close to their makeshift home; cops say mother was heavily drunk the previous night following which she went into a deep slumber
Officials of the Shivajinagar police station registered a case against an unidentified person for raping a four-year-old. The incident came to light in the wee hours of Wednesday after the girl’s grandmother spotted her lying motionless by the dry riverbed, a few feet away from their makeshift tent on a pavement opposite Shramik Bhavan near PMC headquarters.
Police officials have detained three youth on the basis of suspicion, but say that they would have to wait for the girl to regain consciousness for them to investigate further. The minor belongs to a family of ragpickers. Unfortunately, her mother was in an inebriated state when the incident occurred and remained the same before she was informed in the evening about the incident.
Inspector Seema Mehendale of Shivajinagar police station said, “The victim lives on the footpath with her mother and grandmother. There are a few more huts in the area and we suspect one their neighbours. Her mother was heavily drunk and wasn’t able to answer any of our questions. Now we are waiting for the girl to become stable so that she helps us nail her tormentor.”
She added that it was the minors’ grandmother who discovered that she had gone missing after she returned to the tent at around 2 am. “The old lady first searched for the girl nearby the tent, but to no avail. When she searched the riverbed, she found the minor lying motionless on a pile of debris.
The grandmother then rushed to the Sassoon hospital. The girl’s clothes were torn when she was found. Medical tests confirmed that the minor was
raped.” Pandharinath Patil, in-charge of Shivajinagar police station, said a case was registered under Section 376 of the IPC and other relevant sections.
