Stampedes can be avoided
By: A Pillai

Mumbai: It is very sad that nearly 150 people died in the Naina Devi temple stampede, in Himachal Pradesh yesterday.

People should be educated about basic disciplines of public behaviour. It is the primary responsibility of the temple authorities to put barricades and regulate the traffic.

Reports say that the government maintains the temple, therefore the blame squarely falls on it. With sufficient bandobast by the police, such a tragedy could have been averted. At all public places, a regulatory drill should be made mandatory.
