American gymnast takes cue from dad's gold feat

BEIJING:

American girl Nastia Liukin derived inspiration from one of her father's Olympic gold medals in her bedroom to win one of her own.

Nastia's father Valeri had won two golds and two silvers representing Soviet Russia in the Seoul Olympics in 1988 and was over the moon that his 18-year old daughter had claimed the individual event that had eluded him when he finished second 20-years-ago.

"I guess Nastia fixed the little mistake I had", Valeri told the media. "I'm very proud of my baby."
Valeri joked that he still has two more than his daughter, who also won a silver in the team event.

"I'm still chasing him, I have three more finals to beat him", said daughter Liukin who will compete in the asymmetric bars, floor and beam finals.

Valeri said the time had come to put away his medals and display his daughter's instead.
"Nastia's are more important for our family. It's a feeling that I don't think any father can describe."
Liukin said all the hard work had been worth it.

"All the injuries, tears ... everything pays off this very moment. You can only think of good things now."

"I'm disappointed, you feel like you've made a fool of yourself. It was such a blistering pace." – Britain's Jo Pavey, talking to the BBC after her women's 10,000m race in which she finished 12th.
