India’s poor bowling: Why are we surprised?

  • Ashish Nehra In 2010, Nehra bowled an average of 7.2 overs per game. In South Africa, he bowled only 26 overs in four games. Is he fit enough to bowl a 10-over spell?
  • Zaheer Khan India’s bowling captain missed 17 of the 27 ODIs in 2010 mostly due to injury. Zaheer broke down after playing two one-dayers against New Zealand in December.
  • Munaf Patel He’s done a worthy job since his comeback, with 22 wickets from 13 games but has had to battle fitness issues throughout his career. He played just six games in 2010.
  • Harbhajan Singh In SA, the offie played all five games, but struck just once every 70 balls. He played only 6 ODIs in 2010. In the last three years, in 51 games, he has three or more
wickets in a game only six times.
  • Piyush Chawla Prior to his return in Centurion earlier this year, he hadn’t played a game since June 2008. In his last 10 ODIs (June ’08-March ’11), he has conceded in excess of 7 runs per over on five occasions.
