Tensions ran high when Ian Botham and his opposite number Ian Chappell clashed in a Melbourne hotel in 1977. Supposedly Botham repeatedly asked Chappell to stop criticising England before throwing a punch. India cricketers Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer Khan, Piyush Chawla, Ravindra Jadeja, Rohit Sharma and Ashish Nehra were served show cause notices by the BCCI following reports of a bar brawl in St Lucia after India’s exit from the World Twenty20 in the West Indies. In a statement later to BCCI, Jadeja said: “I had gone to the restaurant (pub) for dinner along with other Indian team members. Some guests, which I presume were of Indian origin from USA, had also come there and started abusing us.” Though Nehra later denied the incident, team manager Ranjib Biswal admitted “there was an argument because the boys, who went there (to the pub) for dinner, were harassed by some Indian fans.”

Australia all-rounder Andrew Symonds admitted to suffering from stress-related issues after it was reported that he was engaged in a drunken brawl with one of the patrons at a Brisbane bar who wanted to click a picture with him. Symonds was at the pub celebrating Australia’s 149-run win over New Zealand in the first Test earlier in the day. Cricket Australia, however, later cleared Symonds following an investigation into the matter

Former Australia batsman David Hookes died after suffering head injuries in a fight outside a Melbourne pub. The 48-year-old, who played 23 Tests from 1977-86, was coach of Victoria and was drinking with his players after their win over South Australia in a one-day game. He allegedly got into a fight with one of the pub’s bouncers. He was later revived by paramedics but never regained consciousness
