A lot riding for Ambedkar, Gawai

The fate of two prominent leaders is at stake as the first phase of voting for the Lok Sabha elections begins in several parts of the country today. Prakash Ambedkar, grandson of Dr B R Ambedkar, and Rajendra Gawai, son of former Bihar governor R S Gawai, hope to trounce their opponents at Akola and Amravati respectively.

Ambedkar, who is contesting from Bharipa Bahujan Mahasangha and had represented the constituency in 1999, had lost to the BJP candidate during the last elections. Rajendra Gawai is contesting as a Republican Party of India candidate. No candidate from the Congress-NCP alliance is contesting against Rajendra. During the anti-north Indian tirade last year, Rajendra's father was asked by some MLAs to leave Bihar since he was a Maharashtrian.
