Ek ka dum

By: Varun Singh, Alisha Coelho, Sanjeev Devasia and Urvashi Seth

They may be first timers, but on the eve of E-Day, Independents and small party candidates were oozing with confidence. MiD DAY caught up with a few who believe they are second to none

Rishi Agarwal
Constituency:
Mumbai North West
Profession: Environmentalist
Party: Jago Party
Last appeal: If you need change, then you have to vote for the change.  You need to use your power seriously and vote for the right candidate.
Chances of winning: I will say 50-50. My chances of winning are strong; I have campaigned a lot in the area, and the people recognise me.
On winning...
I will conduct a rigorous analysis of issues like water shortage and segregation of waste, which is the need of the hour.
Will you contest again?
I will contest the next elections for the welfare of my area.

Meera Sanyal

Constituency: Mumbai South
Profession: Banker
Party: Independent
Last appeal: If you are happy with the status quo, there are two candidates you can vote for. However, south Mumbai and the city are important to India and, therefore, if you want to vote for someone who is willing to fight for the needs of the people, vote for me. I've spent 47 years waiting for development and I'm not prepared to spend another 47 years waiting.
Chances of winning: I'm very confident of a win. Doesn't the fact that established candidates are trying to debunk my chances prove that I stand a chance? I'm not a spoiler; I believe in the power of ideals.
On winning...
If elected, my priorities will be better public transport, affordable housing and water for everyone in my constituency.
Will you contest again?
I plan to contest every Lok Sabha election till I die.

Dr Sailen Kumar Ghosh
Constituency: Mumbai South Central
Profession: BARC scientist
Party: Independent
Last appeal: I am contesting to honour the voice of Mumbaikars. Vote for me and honour your desire to bring about change. I am a common man with a clean heart and I will address public issues with the same heart.
Chances of winning: The elections are just like the Mumbai Marathon, where thousands participate to show their solidarity and to show what they are capable of. I believe talking about issues over and over again doesn't matter; you need to act
upon them.
On winning...
I have lot of experience as I am from the field of science and technology. Society needs change and only people who are experienced and well-educated can bring about this change. I can choose the best for the masses  as I have the skill to do so.
Will you contest again?
I will continue to contest.

Mona Shah
Constituency:
Mumbai South
Profession: Eye surgeon
Party: Professionals Party of India (PPI)
Last appeal: Be loyal to you country and vote for the right person.
Chances of winning: The common man will decide.
On winning...
I would like to have an office, where we can invite people to join our party. We need to bridge the gap between the government and the common man and this will be a platform to raise voice.
Will you contest again?
Yes, I will contest again
