Delhi:

His father belongs to a party, which has earned the dubious distinction of running patriarchal politics, yet Siddharth Tytler son of Congress politician Jagdish Tytler chose not to follow in the footsteps of his father. Siddharth has made his bones in the fashion industry as a designer who is known for  cuts and prints in his line of apparel.

No politics please: Siddharth Tytler

Politics is not just his cup of tea, says Tytler whose politician father never approved of his choice of career. An extremely affable guy, Siddharth says he doesn't even vote.

How fashion designing happened to you?
I was in class 10 when I went to a New York to study architecture. I happened to visit the Versace store there and was completely fascinated by the designer creations that I saw. It inspired me to design like Versace and Armani. It was then that I decided to pursue fashion designing and hence went to NIFT in Delhi to study fashion. I went to the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York for further studies and there was no looking back ever since.

What was your family's reaction?
To be honest, my dad was always against my decision. I think he still is. But my parents never forced their wishes on me. They told me do whatever you feel like but be ready to face the consequences for you will be responsible for your actions.

What was the reason behind Mr Tytler's opposition?
My dad is a complete family man. He believed the fashion world was all about partying, alcohol and glamour. It is even true to some extent. You see my dad's world is quite different from mine. There is no way the two can meet.

Does he attend your shows?
No, even last year he didn't come for my show but went to attend another designer's show. So, this time I fought with him and he is coming for my show, which is scheduled for Saturday morning. I want him to see the growth of his son as a fashion designer because I know that from the mad clothes that I used to make I have moved on to more wearable clothes.

If you had to design for your dad, how would you like to dress him?
You know I have grown up watching my dad wearing his trademark white kurta pyjama, so even if I plan to design for him I can't go beyond designing a little stylized kurta pyjama.

According to you who is the most well dressed politician and who are the ones who needs an urgent make over?
I think Kiran Chowdhury and Omar Abdullah are the best dressed of the lot and the list is quite long for those who need a make over. I don't want to name anyone.

Have you ever thought of joining politics?
No not at all, I don't think I am made for it. I am very happy doing fashion designing. I think politics is an ugly business, which I don't want to delve into.

If you could change one thing about your dad, what that would be?
I think he didn't spend enough time with us while we were growing courtesy, his busy public life. He had hardly been with us. So, I wish he had spent more time with us.

How aware are you about the current political scene?
Honestly, I am not at all aware. My dad has been into politics and since childhood, as my parents wanted I kept away from the limelight. Also, I believe politics hasn't changed much. It's all the same. Let's see what the new breed of politicians have to offer. Neither I have time nor I have the energy like my parents. I can't work from 6 am to 12 midnight canvassing throughout and then again do the same thing the next day. I don't even vote so this is how indifferent I am towards politics.
