Pilibhit: BJP workers and saffron activists today converged on Pilibhit awaiting the arrival of Varun Gandhi, who is likely to court arrest in connection with a case filed against him for his hate speeches recently. A large number of activists with saffron flags hailing Varun came in tractors and buses to the town as the BJP candidate left Delhi to court arrest.
BJP workers also clashed with police, leading to some arrests. The district administration has stepped up security in the town and imposed section 144.
"In the wake of Varun Gandhi's visit, tight security arrangements will be made in the district and along with the local police Provincial Armed Constabulary would also be deployed," Superintendent of Police Prakash D had said.
Varun, who is making his electoral debut from Pilibhit, has been in the eye of a storm over his alleged anti-communal speeches in the constituency, a seat represented by his mother Maneka Gandhi so far. The FIR was lodged against Varun in Pilibhit on the direction of election authorities after CDs containing his anti-Muslim speeches surfaced.
