UNLESS you lived under a rock, Twitter was the way to socially interact this year. The newest darling in cyberspace made for water-cooler and Parliament talk and doesn’t seem to be going anywhere in a hurry, being the most Google-d word of 2009. We bring you our list of nominees of the most influential desi tweeters and shakers this year so you can vote for your favourite. We will keep you posted on who is leading and announce the final results on January 5.
- Shashi Tharoor: Tharoor remains unfazed as his tweets continue to land him in the middle of much political heat in Delhi. The public has, however, lapped him up for his politically incorrect diatribe on cattle class flights to the visa clampdown.

- Anand Mahindra: When Dubai came crashing down, Mahindra was telling Indians to rush right in. Insight and experience make him one of the most respected opinion leaders and the only big-league Indian industrialist on Twitter.

- Chetan Bhagat: The writer’s jaunt on Twitter wasn’t roadblock-free as he was only recently everyone’s favourite Tweeter to hate. But discussing topics of the day, Bhagat makes for one tweeter who isn’t only pushing his merchandise over the counter.

- Pritish Nandy: H1N1 airport screenings? Kareena’s performances? Kurbaan review? Naxals? Kotla? Pritish Nandy will tweet about all this and more, often shaping the opinion of thousands of his followers.

- Vir Sanghvi: From telling you where the samosa came from to brutally honest comments on Indian politics and culture, Sanghvi works the medium as successfully as he does print and television.

- Mallika Sherawat: Twitter’s original Indian poster-girl, this actress didn’t stop tweeting even as she changed residence from Mumbai to Los Angeles. She has even been invited to the Twitter headquarters in San Francisco.

- Priyanka Chopra: This desi girl has been all over the place last year, including Twitter. Piggy Chops has amassed a huge following who’ve watched her use Twitter to flaunt casting her vote in the Lok Sabha polls and market her new movies.

- Gul Panag: Gul Panag tweeted about her dog so much that she even decided to set up a twitter account for Milo, her pet beagle. She’s not all about her long drives back home though, and has spent considerable time on Twitter on social commentary.

- Saad Akhtar: Comic strip Fly You Fools creator Akhtar’s sarcasm got to Chetan Bhagat, prompting the latter to block him. What followed was the infamous #chetanblocks tag that made it to the top ten global trending topics and led Bhagat to clarify his actions on his page.

- Asfaq Tapia & friends: One morning, PR exec Tapia and a whole lot of other artists and professionals were infuriated to find that their graffiti to beautify city walls were smothered by film posters. Civic activism online, a blog and hundreds of tweets later, #thewallproject had actor Riteish Deshmukh and others apologising and bringing down the posters.
