External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar addressed the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Ahmedabad on April 02. While addressing the event, the External Affairs Minister categorically spoke about the India-China issues. He further hit out at India’s first Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru-led government and alleged that they made policies that favoured China more than India itself. External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar said, "In 1950, there was an exchange of views between Sardar Patel and (Jawaharlal) Nehru... Sardar Patel had warned Jawaharlal Nehru about China. Sardar Patel said that today we are facing a situation of two fronts (Pakistan and China), which for India has never happened in our history before. Sardar Patel also said that whatever the Chinese are saying, he feels that their intent is not good, and therefore, let us take precautions, and build a policy around this. Nehru's position was that he was completely dissenting. He replied to Patel that you are unnecessarily suspicious of the Chinese... Also, it is impossible for anybody to attack us across the Himalayas".

The Canadian government is reportedly considering India as its ‘potential threat’ ahead of its elections. Days after the stirring India-Canada row, Canada’s media outlet Global News has accessed a declassified canadian intelligence report from Canadian Security Intelligence Service. Global News claims that India and China have been named as “top threats” to Canada in CSIS’ report. The report named ‘Foreign Interference and Elections: A National Security Assesment” was released in October 2022.

Amid the Indian-Canada row, the number of study permits for Indian students has sharply declined. The number of study permits Canada issued to Indian students fell sharply last year after India ejected Canadian diplomats. In an interview with Reuters, Canada’s Immigration Minister said, the number of study permits for Indians is unlikely to rebound soon. Diplomatic tensions erupted in June last year after Canadian PM Trudeau alleged India’s involvement in killing of pro-Khalistani Hardeep Singh Nijjar. In October, Canada was forced to pull 41 diplomats, or two-thirds of its staff, out of India on orders from New Delhi. With more than 41%, Indians have formed the largest group of international students in Canada in recent years. International students are a cash cow for Canadian universities as they bring in about C$22 billion annually. Canada is a popular destination for international students since it is relatively easy to obtain work permits after finishing courses. In 2023, Canada had projected that some 900,000 international students would study in Canada that year.

He talked about India’s diplomatic ties and without mentioning, he slammed the countries condemning India’s energy purchases from Russia. He said, “Diplomacy, international relations, good ties, friendships, are not about giving other people a say in your choice. Our choice must be our choice. However, difficult it is. When it came to our energy purchases, our national choices and national interest, were supposed to be subservient to the political correctness of other countries, who by the way, had made their own arrangements.”

US Secretary of State also welcomed the probe panel set up by India and said “It’s good and appropriate”. India remained a strategic partner but US take alleged assassination plot ‘very seriously’, said White House spokesperson John Kirby. US Department of Justice on November 30 unsealed an indictment against an Indian national. US’ indictment was unsealed alleging murder-for-hire charges against Indian national Nikhil Gupta.

India is all set to hold a virtual G20 Leaders' Summit on Nov 22 under the chairmanship of PM Modi. The virtual G20 Leaders' meeting will witness a major gathering of world leaders. Leaders of all G20 members, including African Union, as well as nine guest countries have been invited. For the first time amid India-Canada row, PM Justin Trudeau will attend the G20 Leaders' Summit. PM Justin Trudeau will attend the National Caucus meeting. EAM Jaishankar talked tough on Nov 16 in London, UK as Canadian PM Trudeau’s reiterated allegations against India amid the Nijjar row. EAM Jaishankar categorically stated that no evidence has been provided from the Canadian side in the killing of Nijjar. “If you have reason to make such an allegation, please share the evidence with us,” said Jaishankar. During the conversation, EAM also pointed out ‘fault lines’ of Canadian politics and said it has given space to violent and extreme political opinions. Diplomatic relations between India and Canada soured after PM Trudeau’s allegations against India in killing of Khalistani terrorist Nijjar. However, recently, PM Justin Trudeau toned down and said ‘fight’ with India is not something Canada wants right now. But in the same speech, PM Trudeau stood by his allegations and accused New Delhi of violating the Vienna Convention by "kicking out" 40 diplomats.
