The Uttarakhand Police have rescued several ‘kaanwariyas’ from drowning into the Ganga River in Haridwar. People participating in annual ‘kanwar festival’ often drown into the river while bathing and taking pictures. Haridwar Senior Superintendent of Police Krishna Kumar VK informed mediapersons that around 36 people were saved in the rescue operation. Various teams are stationed in Haridwar for the safety and security of kaanwariyas’. ‘Kanwariyas’ are devotees of lord Shiva who participate in annual pilgrimage called ‘kanwar yatra’. The pilgrims travel to Hindu pilgrimage places of Haridwar, Gaumukh and Gangotri in Uttarakhand and Sultanganj in Bihar to fetch holy water of Ganga River.
