The Election Commission of India on March 16, Saturday, announced dates for Lok Sabha elections 2024. The first phase of voting will be held on April 19, 2024. The elections will be held in seven phases. The counting of votes for all ballots will be held on June 4. The announcement was made by Chief Election Officer Rajiv Kumar and Election Commissioners Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu. Kumar said 55 lakh electronic voting machines (EVMs) will be used.

Implementation of Citizenship Amendment Act triggered a wave of celebration among the refugees living in Majnu Ka Tila area of Delhi. Celebrations erupted in the Majnu ka Tilla area as the Centre announced to notify CAA’s rules. The refugees played with colours and distributed sweets to celebrate centre’s move to announce the rules that come into force with immediate effect. After years of delay, the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) 2019 has been finally implemented in India. The Union Home Ministry on March 11 notified rules for implementation of the CAA, days ahead of LS Polls 2024. The Act aims to confer Indian citizenship to persecuted non-Muslim migrants including Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis, and Christians who migrated from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan and arrived in India before December 31, 2014. Shortly after the announcement, celebrations broke out among the Pak refugees who had taken shelter in India. Elated by the implementation, one of the refugees from Jodhpur, called PM Modi an ‘incarnation of God’ and also thanked him. Watch video

After years of delay, Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) 2019 has been finally implemented in India. The Union Home Ministry has notified rules for implementation of Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) on March 11, days ahead of LS Polls 2024. Home Minister Amit Shah, on multiple occasions, said that CAA rules would be notified ahead of the Lok Sabha elections to be held in April-May. Since 2020, MHA has been regularly seeking extensions from Parliamentary committees to continue process of framing rules associated with it. Following the passage of CAA by Parliament in Dec 2019 and its subsequent Presidential assent, significant uproar erupted in various parts of country. Over a hundred individuals lost their lives either during protests or due to police action subsequent to passage of law in Parliament. Notably, TMC, led by Mamata Banerjee, has been opposing the CAA which also included a massive uproar in WB. Notably, assurance of implementing CAA was a significant electoral agenda for BJP ahead of the LS Polls 2024

As Pakistanis wait for the Pakistan elections 2024 results, several protests have rocked Pakistan. Pakistan’s general election on Feb 08 was marred by militant attacks, suspension of mobile phones and killing of several people. Imran Khan’s PTI and Nawaz Sharif’s PML-N are in neck-to-neck competition as Imran Khan and Nawaz Sharif both declared victory in the elections. Amid the delay of election results, as per the Pakistan Election Commission independents backed by former PM Imran Khan won the most seats. Independent candidates of Imran Khan had won 100 seats, with Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) taking 72 seats. The polls were held for 265 Pakistan National Assembly seats, a party need 133 seats for a simple majority. Analysts predicted there may be no clear winner, adding problems to country’s economic crisis amid the polarised political environment. As per Dawn, PML-N and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) are proceeding to form a coalition govt in the Centre, Punjab, and Balochistan. Meanwhile, as per Reuters, candidates backed by the party of jailed Imran Khan plan to form a govt, an aide to the former PM said on Feb 10.

The State Department of the United States has issued a travel advisory for its citizens in or traveling to Pakistan. The US has advised its citizens to be vigilant ahead of Pakistan general elections 2024 scheduled for Feb 08. In the advisory, the State Department has highlighted potential disruptions and safety concerns during political activities of Pakistan Elections 2024. It also mentioned that in some instances, political activities in Pakistan have been targeted for violence.

Telangana Exit Polls: After the exit poll projection showed Congress leading the race to form government in Telangana, state Congress president Revanth Reddy on November 30 said that it is the victory of people of Telangana. Revanth Reddy said, “Congress is going to get landslide victory this time and the same thing is reflected in the exit polls. We are going to get over 80 seats...There is a screening committee, a selection committee and then the CWC has to take a call (for CM). In Congress, there is a process for everything. Rajasthan Elections 2023: Voting for Rajasthan Assembly election began on November 25. Mass of people queued outside polling booths to cast their votes. Security was beefed up in and around the polling station to avoid any chaos The polling in 199 out of 200 constituencies will continue till 6 pm. Union government has constituted a ‘One Nation, One Election’ Committee on September 1. The committee has been formed under the chairmanship of former President Ram Nath Kovind. Committee will explore the possibility which envisages holding of general, states polls simultaneously. CEC Rajiv Kumar said that EC is ready to conduct elections as per legal provisions. Earlier, AIMIM Chief Owaisi rejected the possibility of ‘One Election’ Bill and called it “unconstitutional”. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on several occasions pitched the idea of One Nation, One Election.
