The US and UK Armed Forces conducted strikes against 18 Houthi targets in Yemen. The attacks were backed by several Western nations including Australia, Canada, Denmark, New Zealand. The strikes targeted areas used by the Houthis to attack international merchant vessels and naval ships in the region. For months, Houthi attack have been disrupting aid bound for Yemen harming Middle Eastern economies. Meanwhile, Houthi military on February 25 said that they targeted an American oil tanker in Gulf of Aden. Houthi Military spokesperson Yahya Sarea said their navy targeted the US-flagged, owned commercial ship, MV Torm Thor. Britain also released a video of Typhoon fighter jets and Voyager tanker aircraft in operation for joint military action against Houthis. The US and Britain have re-designated the Houthis as a terrorist group, after they began targeting commercial vessels.

Security has been stepped up in Banbhoolpura area of Uttarakhand’s Haldwani after violence broke out. An anti-encroachment drive was carried out on February 08 after which violence broke out in the area. So far, 4 persons killed, and over 100 policemen sustained injuries in the Haldwani violence. Four companies of paramilitary forces were rushed to the city to maintain the law and order situation. District Magistrate has imposed a curfew in Banbhoolpura and issued shoot-at-sight orders. Many vehicles including cars, motorcycles were set ablaze during the violence on February 08. Internet Services have been suspended and educational institutions have been closed in the district. Uttarakhand Police has also requested the Home Ministry to send additional paramilitary forces. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami urged locals to maintain the law and order in district.

Tensions shimmer in Red Sea as Yemen-backed Houthis continue to attack commercial ships, affecting int’l trade. Houthi rebels launched 18 drones over the southern Red Sea, according to the US military's Central Command, reported Al Jazeera. The Houthi rebels, who are an Iran-aligned group, started the strikes in retaliation for Israel’s Gaza conflict. Amid affecting int’l trade channel, US Secy of State Antony Blinken held a telephonic conversation with EAM Jaishankar. Both leaders discussed recent attacks on merchant ships by Houthis in the Red Sea, informed State Dept spox Matthew Miller. Blinken emphasised that the Red Sea is a major commercial corridor that welcomed increased cooperation with India. Taking to X, EAM S Jaishankar informed about his insightful discussions with his “friend” Antony Blinken. Hailing India-US ties, he said that both countries will look forward to realising their extensive cooperation agenda for 2024. The US Secretary and EAM also discussed the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, efforts to prevent the escalation.

In a big boost to Air Defence System, India has strongly demonstrated the firepower of its Akash surface-to-air (SAM) weapon system. With a single-firing unit, the Akash weapon system simultaneously engaged and destroyed 4 unmanned targets during recent Air Force Exercise Astrashakti 2023. As per officials, 4 targets coming from same direction in close formation were split to attack their defence assets from multiple directions simultaneously. With this, India has become 1st to demonstrate capability of engaging 4 targets simultaneously at such ranges by command guidance using single firing unit. Notably, Akash has been deployed by the Indian Air Force and the Indian Army at key locations to counter threats. The current firing was done from the system, which was ordered in September 2019 as a repeat order from the IAF. The Akash weapon system is also one of the indigenous defence systems that have bagged orders from international customers. Notably, it is also being constantly upgraded by DRDO scientists involved in it and they may get more orders from Southeast Asia and Middle East.

The Israeli army on December 4 released footage showing what it said were ground and air operations against Hamas targets in Gaza amid the Israel-Hamas Conflict. In the video footage, Israeli soldiers could be seen carrying weapons and firing toward what they said were Hamas targets, and aerial footage showed destruction of what the Israeli army said was Hamas infrastructure. According to an Israeli army statement, the army entered a building where they encountered Hamas fighters and during the battle inside the building, two Israeli sergeants were killed and two other soldiers were injured. Israeli troops and tanks also pressed the ground campaign against Hamas militants in the south of the enclave after having largely gained control of the now-devastated north.

Amid the Israel-Hamas conflict, the Israeli Air Force eliminated the head of the anti-tank system of the militant group on Nov 01. The commander, identified as Muhammad Atzar, was killed under the direction of Israeli security agency Shin Bet. Muhammad Atzar was responsible for all the anti-tank systems in the various brigades in the Gaza Strip. He managed the force on a routine basis and assisted in its activation in an emergency. Israeli forces continued to pound numerous Hamas targets, killing the top commanders of the terrorist outfit. IDF launched a large-scale ground incursion inside the Gaza Strip with the intent to kill Hamas militants. Israeli tanks have been active inside Gaza for at least four days following Hamas’ attack on October 7. Amid the Israel-Hamas Conflict, The sight of destruction in Gaza is far from ending as the conflict between Israel-Palestine entered day 26. Thousands of Israeli missiles continued to pound Hamas’ targets killing top commanders of the militant group. Massive bombings, explosions were heard near the Gaza border on Oct 27 after Israel stepped up its operations. Also, an IAF aircraft, guided by ground forces, struck a Hamas post killing over 20 terrorist operatives in it, said IDF. Meanwhile, a new visual emerged from Gaza which showed Israeli soldiers entering Gaza strip. Armed soldiers, rolling tanks could be seen launching its ground operation inside Gaza. Ground troops struck Hamas outpost in the northern area of Gaza strip, including anti-tank missile launching cells and posts. The tunnels under the cramped enclave are a prime objective for Israel as it expands a four-day-old ground offensive. Also, 8,525 people have been killed in Israeli attacks since Oct 7, said Gaza health authorities.
