Denouncing the recently enacted Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) once again, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi went all guns blazing against BJP on March 16 in Hyderabad, Telangana. During a press conference, he alleged that the BJP government wants to make the poor and Muslims stateless. "Our case (challenging CAA) is already in the Supreme Court but at that time govt of India said that the rules are yet not framed. But now as the govt has issued the notifications and has framed the rules for CAA, going to the Supreme Court is a must. If the govt starts giving citizenship based on an unconstitutional law, it can be harmful... This govt is saying that if your religion is Islam, we won't provide you the citizenship, for this we have moved to the Supreme Court. The law was passed in 2019 by the ruling party, but they keep it as it is, when they saw that there would be an announcement for elections in a week, they came up with rules in the night by keeping in mind, the elections. The BJP-led govt wants to make the poor and Muslims stateless.

PM Modi implemented CAA on 11th of March. After the implementation several doubts have been raised which has now been cleared by the Union Home Minister Amit Shah. He had a detailed discussion on CAA in an interview on 14th March. He was asked about his stance on international media terming CAA as an "anti-muslim" law. To this, he replied, "You cannot see this law in isolation. In 1947, partition was done based on religion... Congress leaders at the time had said that people who migrated could come back anytime. But due to appeasement politics, Congress never fulfilled its promise... "

Haldwani Violence: Eyewitness, victim recounts horrific incident that claimed 4 lives

Security has been stepped up in Banbhoolpura area of Uttarakhand’s Haldwani after violence broke out. An anti-encroachment drive was carried out on February 08 after which violence broke out in the area. So far, 4 persons killed, and over 100 policemen sustained injuries in the Haldwani violence. Four companies of paramilitary forces were rushed to the city to maintain the law and order situation. District Magistrate has imposed a curfew in Banbhoolpura and issued shoot-at-sight orders. Many vehicles including cars, motorcycles were set ablaze during the violence on February 08. Internet Services have been suspended and educational institutions have been closed in the district. Uttarakhand Police has also requested the Home Ministry to send additional paramilitary forces. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami urged locals to maintain the law and order in district.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on June 25 hit back at former US President Barack Obama. In an interview with CNN, Barack Obama said that India must protect its minorities, or it would ‘pull apart’. “If I had a conversation with PM Modi who I know well, part of my argument would be that if you do not protect the rights of ethnic minorities in India, then there is a strong possibility that India at some point starts pulling apart. We have seen what happens when you start getting those kind of large internal conflicts,” Former US President Barack Obama had said in an interview with CNN. A recent report by Pew Research Center claimed that 98% of India’s Muslims are free to practice their religion in the nation. The remaining 2% said they were “not too free” to practice their religion, with virtually no one answering “not at all free”. As per its website, Pew Research Center is a nonpartisan fact tank that talks about the issues, attitudes, trends shaping the world. In an Opinion piece by Washington Examiner, American Sociologist Salvatore Babones quoted this info from Pew Research. He compared the situation of minorities in India and the US, from where several reports questioning India’s democracy are published. Notably, US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) in its annual report proposed to blacklist India. USCIRF recommended 17 countries (including India) to the State Department to be designated as ‘Countries of Particular Concern’. As per Pew Research Center’s survey, 95% of Muslims said that they were “proud to be Indian”.

Union minister Amit Shah on Monday gave justification for scrapping the 4 per cent Muslim reservation in Karnataka saying it was “unconstitutional” and blamed the previous Congress party who introduced it for appeasement and consolidation of the Muslim vote bank. In an interview, the Bharatiya Janata Party leader said that there was no provision in the constitution for reservation on the basis of religion. Targeting Congress over the issue, Shah said that the party “brought this reservation for appeasement and consolidating vote bank.”
