Sandeshkhali violence: Police and BJP supporters clash in West Bengal’s Basirhat

The political storm over the events at Bengal’s Sandeshkhali sparked violence in another part of the state on February 13. Clashes broke out between police personnel and BJP supporters on February 13 after efforts were made to defy prohibitory orders clamped in the vicinity of the SP’s office in West Bengal's Basirhat prior to the agitation of the party over allegations of sexual harassment of women in Sandeshkhali block leading to Sandeshkhali violence. BJP workers, led by the party’s state chief, Sukanta Majumdar, clashed with the police in Basirhat after being stopped from holding a protest. Police personnel were seen charging party workers as the latter broke through barricades and entered the village. Scenes of chaos filled the village as the police resorted to lathi-charge to drive away the protesters. After which, several workers and Sukanta Majumdar were detained. Later, West Bengal BJP chief Sukanta Majumdar, along with the other workers of the party, were released. Sukanta Majumdar said, “The police detained us and party workers... The police misbehaved even with the women workers of the party... We will take the police to the court... They treated us like thieves or criminals... The police do not obey the Constitution of the CrPC, they only listen to Mamata Banerjee.”

Ahead of the Bihar floor test, the political drama has heightened as leaders and supporters of RJD and JDU are ensuing in a war of words. Former Bihar Deputy CM and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav arrived at the Bihar Assembly in Patna on February 12. Amid huddles and shifting of MLAs to secure locations in the state or beyond ahead of the crucial trust vote, both the JDU-NDA alliance and the RJD party claimed to have the majority. Janata Dal (United) leader Rajiv Ranjan Prasad on February 12 said that the NDA alliance will get the majority and the government will complete its tenure. RJD supporters gathered outside former Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav’s residence and raised anti-Nitish slogans to extend their support to Tejashwi Yadav. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh on the floor test in Bihar said, that when Palti Kumar (Nitish Kumar) is ruling and no one knows which way he will turn now.

MP Sanjay Singh arrested in Delhi Liquor Case, AAP supporters revolt

Amid lusty sloganeering from party supporters, ED on Oct 04 arrested AAP’s Sanjay Singh from his Delhi residence. The Rajya Sabha MP was arrested in connection with with the now-scrapped liquor policy case. His was the second high-profile arrest in the case after former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia. The arrest came hours after the ED conducted raids at the residence of the AAP Rajya Sabha MP in connection with the case. As word of his arrest got out, various AAP workers gathered outside Singh's residence, condemning his arrest. Meanwhile, Sanjay Singh’s family alleged that ED officials couldn’t find anything and misbehaved with them. Before his arrest the AAP MP said, “Cowardly and dictatorial Prime Minister wants to win elections this way.”The AAP leader alleged further that the officers misused their position to tarnish his public image and demanded prosecution against them. He added that he had already sent a legal notice to the officers concerned to issue an open and public apology. As per to ED, name of the AAP leader appears four times in the ED chargesheet, one of which was typed inadvertently. At one place Sanjay Singh's name was mentioned instead of Rahul Singh, who was the then excise commissioner.

Recently, the Indian High Commissioner to the UK, Vikram Doraiswami was prevented from entering a Gurudwara in Glasgow, Scotland. This comes amid a diplomatic row between India and Canada over the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. A video of the incident has been doing rounds on the internet, where a man can be seen blocking Doraiswami from entering the Gurudwara. Colin Bloom, former advisor to UK government, said that the Khalistan extremism has escalated due to the inability of Western governments to do enough. Bloom stressed that both the British and Canadian governments should take more proactive measures to address this issue. India has flagged the issue with the UK Foreign Office and also the police, according to sources.

NCP Maharashtra chief Jayant Patil Monday appeared before the ED in Mumbai to face inquiry in connection with a case on alleged irregularities in the now bankrupt financial services firm IL&FS. The 61-year-old MLA from the Islampur seat of Maharashtra reached the ED’s Ballard Estate office in South Mumbai. NCP workers on Monday staged a protest outside the ED office over the NCP leader’s summon. Punjab Police on April 23 arrested Khalistan sympathiser Amritpal Singh from Rode village in Moga district of Punjab. Giving details about his arrest, IGP Punjab Sukhchain Singh Gill said that Amritpal was surrounded from all sides.He said, “Amritpal Singh has been arrested by Punjab Police at around 6:45 am today morning. Special operation was launched, joint operation was conducted by Amritsar Police and Intelligence Wing of Punjab Police.”Further, he said, “He was located in village Rode based on operational inputs by Punjab Police and he was surrounded from all sides, the village was surrounded by Punjab Police. Since he was inside a Gurudwara Sahib, so to maintain sanctity of Gurudwara Sahib is Supreme for everyone. To maintain sanctity, the police did not enter the Gurudwara Sahib. He knew that he had no way to escape now, he was surrounded by Punjab Police from all sides.

Amritpal Singh, the fugitive 'Waris Punjab De' chief, has been arrested from Moga's Rhode village in Punjab on early Sunday morning. The pro-Khalistani leader is being shifted to Assam's Dibrugarh jail where other members of his outfit are already lodged. Amritpal Singh has been arrested under the National Security Act. The arrest was done by combined efforts of the Punjab Police and national intelligence.
