Though it seems painfully irksome, the dupatta does add a touch of elegance to your outfit. There’s a lot that you can do with that 2.5 metre cloth. Use it as scarf to beat the sun or just wrap it around your arms for a party or make it into a sarong you can be as creative as you want to be. Here are a few tips to make the most of your dupatta. !

Round the neck
Wear the dupatta on one shoulder. Circle it and let it fall on the same side. Best for women of average height and built.
Advantage: Looks smart and can be used to cover your head when out in the sun too. Works well if you don’t have a matching dupatta or are using a stole.
Tip: Don’t attempt this with voluminous dupattas as you may feel stifled

U-shaped down the neck
Looks casually pretty, is practical and suits almost every type of salwar kameez. Suited for women of medium built
Advantage: Lifts the face and adds balance to your outfit. But don’t try this if your dupatta doesn’t match your outfit
Tip: For a finer silhouette, draw the dupatta closer to your face with the center in the middle

On the reverse
Suits almost every type of dupatta or stole. Ideal for plump women as it takes away volume from the chest as well as for those with narrow shoulders
Advantage: Gives an illusion of length, lifts the silhouette and adds dimension
Tip: If your kurta has front embroidery, try this style

Saree style dupatta
Pin up the corner of the dupatta to your left shoulder from behind. Take the dupatta from the back and over your right shoulder. Now pin up this end to your left shoulder. Well suited for buxom women or ones with broad shoulders
Advantage: It provides a cover up for your transparent or low neckline kurtas
Tip: Avoid this style on cotton dupattas, it may look messy after a while

On one shoulder
Suits nicely starched cotton dupattas as well as silk ones. Gives shorter women an illusion of height
Advantage: Reduces the width of the dupatta thereby balancing the volume of the outfit. Try this style with fitted salwar-suit to get the executive look
Tip: Accessorise with a nice brooch or necklace
