When your mobile phone rings, do people squirm and give you dirty looks or turn back to notice you? If it’s the former, maybe you need to change your ringtone, or simpler, put your phone on silent. If it’s the latter, you’re on the right track.

Believe it or not, ringtones actually get you noticed. Says Kunal Kashayap, a cellphone enthusiast who changes his tone every 2-3 weeks, “My ringtone depends on my mood. Right now, I’ve set Bon Jovi’s It’s My Life, but before this I had Kya Mujhe Pyaar Hai from the film Woh Lamhe.” But, the selection process is often contrived, confesses Kashayap. “If I’m wooing a girl, I try to find out what her favourite song is and set it as my ringtone. It’s guaranteed to impress her,” says this serial dater.

If you’re planning to follow his tactics, we suggest you exercise some caution, at least in office. Please ensure that your colleagues are not subjected to Bryan Adams’ soppy rendition of Everything I Do…

Instead, opt for something classier, like Beethoven or The Doors. But, make sure the tone suits your personality. Simply put, don’t sport an Ustad Bismillah Khan ringtone when you dress like a Kurt Cobain. It’s safe to choose something from your favourite genre. Manu Talwar, CEO, Bharti Airtel says, “Since mobile users are so choosy about ringtones, we offer a wide range of genres to select from — evergreen to classics, new arrivals to remixes, indi-pop to ghazals, there is something for everyone.”

But, when it comes to selecting a ringtone, Vikram Shivdekar, another mobile enthusiast doesn’t care what genre it belongs to as long as it’s the latest. “To me, it is a matter of pride to get a ringtone before everyone else does. My friends envy me and keep pestering me to bluetooth it to them. I get all the attention I want.” Mission accomplished.

Aashish Mudbidri, a marketing manager with a media firm also keeps friends and colleagues in mind while choosing his tone. “Even if I want to set a Marathi song as my ringtone, I can’t because I know I’ll be the butt of all jokes within my friends’ circle. So I play it simple and either opt for newer hits doing the rounds or something from my favourite genre.”

Even though the new Bollywood blockbusters like Om Shanti Om and Saawariya may be all the rage these days, we think opting for less common tones is more stylish. After all you do want to be different from the world. But now don’t go get yourself a Mother India ringtone, just to be different !

WHAT YOUR RINGTONE SAYS ABOUT YOU:

Western classical: You want to alert people to your good taste, love of classical music, and high-brow artistic pursuits

Film theme songs: You're a complete film buff and are eligible to win Bollywood Badshah

Rock: You are a bit of a rebel. You have a distinct taste in music and want to impose it on the world

Animal noises: You have a sense of humour. You want people to laugh at you. Just make sure you don’t overdo it

Pop songs: You’re really young, at least at heart. But we draw the line at Dangerous

Old Hindi film songs: Remixes are trash and the new composers are morons. You will not let them dilute your standards.
