HOBART: Shane Warne and Muttiah Muralitharan denied yesterday there is any rift between them, despite the Sri Lankan record-breaking offie Muralitharan having referred to the Australia leg spinner in a newspaper article as “a miserable, sad man”.

The duo was together in Hobart to unveil the Warne-Muralitharan Trophy, which from now on will be awarded to the winner of Test series between the two countries.

However, Muralitharan said his comments were only made as a result of him falsely believing that Warne had cast doubts on his bowling action in his newspaper column.

“I thought he said something about my action and I said he was a miserable, sad man but we just talked to each other and we patched up,” he said. “It was a miscommunication more than anything else.”

Warne strongly denied he had questioned the bowling action of Muralitharan.

“All I said in my column was that common sense should prevail in that if anybody has an issue with an action, anybody in world cricket then they should be tested in match conditions.”

“I am pretty happy at the moment actually, I am not that miserable — we had a bit of a laugh about it actually,” Warne said.
