Third seed Nikhil Passi had to slug it out before advancing to the boys’ under-12 quarter-final in the Vazirani Maharashtra State Ranking Junior

tennis tournament at the Vazirani National Sports Academy, Nerul, Navi Mumbai yesterday.

The nine-year-old of Practennis (Andheri) endured a strong challenge from unseeded Karan Mehta who ran him close to force the match into extra points, before Passi won 9-8 (9-3) after enjoying an early lead in the tie-breaker.

In the girls’ under-12, top seed Bharathi Bylapudi and No 2 Snehadevi Reddy advanced to the quarter-final with convincing wins.
