DY Patil Stadium gets first-class... FINALLY!

The Dr DY Patil Stadium's wait to host its maiden first-class match has finally ended with the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) allotting the (Dec 29-Jan 1) Ranji Trophy tie between Mumbai and Gujarat to the Nerul venue.

The decision was taken at the MCA managing committee meeting recently. “Dr DY Patil Stadium will hold the Mumbai-Gujarat Ranji match this season,” said MCA’s joint honorary secretary Dr PV Shetty.

Vijay Patil, the brainchild behind the state-of-the-art stadium, welcomed MCA’s move. “It has taken a while, but I am happy. We have always been wanting official cricket to come to DY Patil Stadium and are happy that first-class cricketers can now avail the world-class facilities at our stadium.

It’s not only a good development for the venue, but it is also great for fans in Navi Mumbai, who can now watch quality cricket here,” said Patil, who is also the vice-president of the MCA. Incidentally, the venue was awarded the 2009 India vs Australia ODI, but rain washed out the tie.
