Spurs suffer home defeat to Fulham
Tottenham Hotspur's challenge for a Champions League place received another setback yesterday when they lost 1-0 at home to Fulham to register a second consecutive Premier League defeat.
Having eliminated Inter Milan from the Europa League on Thursday, Spurs were bidding to tighten their grip on third place in the table and Gareth Bale had an early header cleared off the line by Sascha Riether.
However, the hosts lost Michael Dawson to injury at half-time and then saw former striker Dimitar Berbatov claim the game’s only goal in the 52nd minute when he converted Riether’s low right-wing cross.
Spurs’ best chance fell to Jermain Defoe in the dying stages, but his effort from Bale’s cut-back met its match in a superb reflex save from Mark Schwarzer.
Frank Lampard scored his 200th Chelsea goal as the Blues climbed to third in the Premier League with a 2-0 victory over West Ham in yesterday’s London derby at Stamford Bridge.
Lampard had been stuck on 199 goals for the last month but the England midfielder fittingly reached the landmark against his former club. Eden Hazard added Chelsea’s second goal early in the second half and that was enough to ensure Benitez’s team move one point above Tottenham and remain five points clear of fifth placed Arsenal.
