Aamir's the flavour of the season

By: Namita Gupta

Film: Ghajini (Hindi)
Star cast: Aamir Khan, Asin Thottumkal, Jiah Khan

Direction: A R Murugadoss

Theatres: PVR, Fame, Fun, Innovative Multiplex, Inox

Rating: ***1/2

What's it about: Sanjay Singhania (Aamir Khan) is a high-flying business tycoon who falls in love with struggling model Kalpana (Asin Thottumkal). Actually, he hates her before he sees her but her kind heart and terrific looks bowl him over. They sing some soulful songs before she is bumped off in a very brutal manner. Tycoon now becomes trained killer. He has just one mission: to hunt down Ghajini, his girl friend's murderer. He pulps a few Ghajinis before he gets to the real guy — Ghajini Dharmaraj (Pradeep Rawat). But our hero has a problem. He suffers from amnesia — not the garden variety sort of memory loss but one that leaves him utterly and totally blank in exactly 15 minutes. So, he carries photographs to remind himself of what he is doing and why he is hounding someone or the other. He is helped (hindered, actually) by Sunita (Jiah Khan), a medical student who is desperate to play ministering angel when Ghajini attacks him and amnesia strikes him.

What's hot: This is commericial cinema with all its cliches – violence, blood-soaked fight sequences, raw passion and a twist in the tale. Aamir Khan stays silent for a better part of the film, but his eyes do all the talking. And of course, don't even dream of taking your eyes off his rippling muscles. As one fan put it, Aamir looks 'totally delectable'.  Asin infuses warmth and cheer into the otherwise serious film.

What's not: The plot suffers from leaps in logic. The amnesia bit is overdone. The effort to showcase Aamir's muscles is OTT, but, heck, who's complaining!

Verdict:  The movie is a winner. Watch Ghajini and you will understand why Aamir is 'the' flavour of the season
