True to its name, the lifestyle store Sanskriti, will reacquaint you with your cultural roots

It's all about Indian handicrafts and colonial furniture at the Sanskriti Lifestyle Store. Owner Sonali Pingale is proud of the fact that she has hand-picked every piece from places like Delhi, Rajasthan, Kolkata and Kashmir. "I have always loved the rich tradition of Indian handicrafts and personally enjoy collecting artefacts," she adds.



Ambience: If you have an artistic bent of mind, you will certainly welcome being surrounded by art. The three cottages on the premises that house the products, effuse an old-world charm and are overflowing with pieces of art and furniture. Stroll through the well-manicured lawns and spot the stone animals, Ganeshas and other figurines. Unfortunately, these are not for sale.

Range: They store wooden artefacts with carvings, complete with Rajasthani pitaras (dowry chests) to jharokas (carved windows), brass idols, wooden beds, ornate cupboards and rocking chairs. They also offer jewellery in silver as well as precious and semi-precious stones, lanterns, old lithographs, and detailed embroidered panels in Kashmiri and Kutchhi styles.

The bulk of the furniture is in Burma teak and rosewood. Some of the pieces have traditional inlay work of rosewood, mahogany, brass or marble.

We liked: An elegant stone Ganesha (Rs 3,500). The papier mache Raja and Rani set (Rs 2,500 for a pair) also caught our fancy. A Burma teak table with marble inlay work (Rs 6,300) stands out among the other furniture. Other striking pieces were the mirror wall piece (Rs 22,050), a full-length mirror in wood (Rs 14,000), and a white hanging lantern (Rs 5,600).
