Let's all pool in

By: Namita Gupta

WE PLEDGE: Shyju Varkey, station head, Radio One, Robin Uthappa, Charu Sharma, Anu Prabhakar, Praveen Sood ACP (traffic) and Vipul Kasera of Commuteeasy

We wake up every day  bracing ourselves for traffic jams and road rage. We crib, we complain. No here's what we can do: Be  a part of the initiative by 94.3 Radio One and CommuteEasy, along with Bangalore Traffic Police, and take a pledge to car pool.

Scary stats

"There are 20 flyovers under construction right now in the city and, with the road-widening plan under process, we can't wish traffic jams away. There are 37 lakh vehicles on our roads," said  Praveen Sood, additional commissioner, explaining why grid locks are a daily occurance in the city.

Hope in sight

"People, who sign  up for the initiative, can look for car pooling partners on www.commuteeasy.com. Look for people who live within one kilometre radius, and also keep in mind their work timings and route. Depending on whether one has a car or not, one can offer a ride or accept a ride," explained Vipul Kasera, of Commute Easy.

Be the solution

"Enough has been said about things going wrong in Bangalore," said Shyju Varkey, station head, Radio One.

"We think it's time to stop talking and start acting. Traffic congestion is not a problem that can be addressed indefinitely by building more roads, flyovers or adding more lanes. We need transportation alternatives that will reduce the number of cars on city roads. Fewer cars mean lower emissions, also lesser carbon footprints. If everyone left their car behind for at least one trip each week, traffic jams would be a thing of past in the city.

We want Bangaloreans to know that small individual changes can make a huge difference," he added.
To travel on better roads with less traffic hazards, log on to the commuteasy website now.

I urge youngsters to car pool. It's cool to think about the environment
Robin Uthappa, cricketer

We all have to make an effort. My better half has been urging me to take a Volvo bus every time I go to the airport and I will try it now
Charu Sharma, sports commentator

My friends from Mumbai often complain about the traffic in Bangalore. We car-pool when we go for a film shoot on the outskirts of the city. I will now make an effort to car pool even when I commute in the city
