Go east for Kebabs, Curries and Biryanis

Murg Nizami served with salad

An outlet of the established eatery in Mumbai, Kareems' Pune branch, located in the bustling Camp area, is the perfect pick for kebab, curry  and biryani lovers. The restaurant serves Indian cuisine, and specialises in Lucknowi and Hyderabadi preparations.

Ambience: Stark white walls and sleek dark wood furniture gives the joint a warm vibe. The soft yellow lighting adds to the mood. Patrons are usually seated on the upper level, with only a few seats available beside the kitchen on the ground floor.

We tried: We started our meal with Murg Nizami (Rs 139), a kebab dish prepared in traditional Nizami style and baked in an earthen oven. The chicken was well marinated and grilled, but was a tad greasy.

The vegetarian fare started with Paneer Ajwaini (Rs 139). The dish tasted mild and the spices hardly tickled our taste buds. We followed this up with a Tadkewali Dal (Rs 99) which was a tasty blend of lentils with assorted spices.

The Dal, and our final main course order Nalli Ki Nihari (Rs 159) surprisingly looked alike! The latter was a gravy-based preparation with chunks of succulent lamb leg pieces cooked in Hyderabadi style. The mutton was tender, juicy and went well with Tandoori Rotis. A must-try, we say.

We liked how the Malai Phirnee (Rs 49) was not excruciatingly sweet, and topped with a generous helping of dry fruits.

Service: While the food took a little longer than expected, the staff was warm, friendly and forthcoming. They were well-informed, and were receptive to our feedback.

At: Kumar Pavillion, opposite Bank of India, East Street, Camp.
