Where to buy cricket balls that light up

By: Anjana Vaswani

Nirmin Sabuwala and daughter Jasbir of Rituals Wax Skills, are the women you should get in touch with if you want to gift a quirky skull-and-bones floating candle, or need a thousand wax pillars for a massive wedding bash

Amused by our enquiry about her gothic range of candles, Oshiwara resident Nirmin Sabuwala says college kids love her skull-and-bones floats. "Once, we created a massive red-horned wax devil to hang at the entrance of a college party. It had horns that would light up, and candles were placed within a bamboo cigar positioned in his mouth."

Far from being put off by strange requests, Nirmin loves an opportunity to innovate. She and daughter Jasbir are happy to custom-make single candles too, and even offer a rent-a-candle service. A scene starring Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor in Mujhse Dosti Karoge used candles rented from them. Yashraj Films and Dharma Productions are clients. Nirmin charges 30% of the cost of the candle, for use over a 24-hour period.

During Ganesh Chaturthi, blocks and pillars with Swastika and Om are highly sought after (Rs 310 to Rs 1,200). Wax blocks embedded with stones that are carved to reveal the face of the Buddha are hotsellers too (Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000). Pillars of varying textures and dimensions (tree-trunk pillars) are customised routinely (1 foot tall wax pillar costs Rs 600).
