Indulge into a long foreplay of navigating the colourful menu and satiate with a climax of authentic Punjabi flavours at Sadda Punjab
If you haven't stepped into the land of Punjab, then you definitely must have got a fair dose of it, from the Punjab-obsessed Bollywood. And once you're into the fervour, you will long for the fresh environs (think Shahrukh Khan and Kajol croon 'Tujhe dekha to ye jaana sanam' in the mustard fields), to savour makki di roti, sarson da saag and finish it up with a brimful steel glass of fresh lassi, or better still, chew into a sugarcane in the midst of green paddy fields.
At Umerkot's Sadda Punjab food fest, which is on till November 15, you will not find all this, but don't frown yet, the treasured Punjabi khana is what you can vouch for. And no, the many Reddy's Punjabi dhabas on the Bangalore-Mysore Road are no match.
With the Bangalore weather getting a wee bit nippy towards the evening, it is right time to temper your taste buds with Raara Meat, Sarson Da Saag, Makki Di Roti, Maa Ki Dal or Kukkad Tangdi Mastana, with no overpowering flavours.
The line up of kebabs is pretty impressive too. While the melt-in-mouth pan-fried Amritsari Macchi is a chart-topper, the otherwise mundane Paneer Pakoda, Tandoori Murga, Macchi De Tikke are not too far behind.
Also, try some of the traditional dishes from the farmlands of Amritsar, Jallandhar and Ludhiana. Some dishes are typical of Punjab, like Dhania Aloo Wadi, which is basically lentil dumplings fried and cooked in a masala gravy and Kukkad Makhanwala, a tomato based chicken curry with loads of butter, tasting just like it would back home. Team these with either a Missi Roti or an Ajwaini Roti.
End your meal with Gajrela (carrot halwa) or better still Anjir Kulfi, laden with dates and loads of dry fruits and you will know why we Punjabis are rotund. You might be found burping and belching, many hours later and end up promising yourself not to get tempted into such a hearty feast.
