Fusion is the name of the game at the Shisha Jazz Festival. The GUIDE tells you about the impressive line-up this year

Ranjit Barot from Amit Heri Trio

It's raining jazz music in Pune. After Dutchmen Ronald Douglas and the Dutch Jazz quartet enthralled us with their performance, some desi bands are geared up to create musical magic. The annual Shisha Jazz Festival on November 5 and 6 will feature four bands from across the country, such as JUNCT (Mumbai), Matt Littlewood Quartet (Auroville), Adrian Dsouza Fusion Band and Amit Heri Trio (Bangalore).

JUNKCT includes Hitesh (guitar), Paul (trumpet), Adi (bass), Rajeev (flute), Nakul (saxophone), Neerav (drums) and Umang (congo). The Matt Littlewood Quartet, a Pondicherry-based band consists of Matt (saxophone), Michel (bass), Vijji (guitar) and Sourindera (drums). It specialises in classical jazz music.

The Adrian Dsouza Fusion Band features the trio of Adrian (drummer), Kenneth (bass) and Bevan (keyboard).

Their focus is on fusion music as well as contemporary sounds. The Amit Heri Trio consists of Ranjit Barot (drum) and Keith Peters (bass) and their focus is also on fusion music.

The musicians promise an evening full of quirky combinations and some great music. The Adrian Dsouza band will be teaming up with sarangi player Sangeet Mishra for their performance. "It will be a presentation of Indo-Western music with a fusion between the traditional sarangi and the modern drums," adds Dsouza.

"Our show will be about high-energy original music, which is sure to delight Punekaris," grins Amit Heri.

Though, jazz music seems to be catching up fast in the city, musicians insist there is still a long way to go. "Jazz music is still at a nascent stage as compared to Bollywood and classical music," admits Amit.

At: Shisha Cafe, ABC Farms, Koregaon Park Road Extension.
TILL: November  6, 7 pm onwards. Watch Junct and Matt Littlewood Quartet tonight and Adrian Dsouza Fusion Band and Amit Heri Trio on November 6.
