Sonia Balani on bagging Ramayana

Sonia Balani revealed that she auditioned for the role of Urmila in Ramayana, but her first choice was Surpanakha, which is eventually being played by Rakul Preet Singh. She said, “I auditioned for Urmila’s role, but my first preference was Surpanakha, which is now being played by Rakul Preet Singh. For some reason, I really wanted to play that role. By the time I was auditioning for Urmila, I asked them if I could audition for Surpanakha as well. They told me that the role was already locked.”

When asked about audience reactions to her appearance and comments that she looked prettier than Sai Pallavi and should have played Sita, the 27-year-old actress said, “At many places, people were writing that I looked prettier and that I should have been Sita. But honestly, I loved Sai in the film. I have seen her work, and maybe it is way too soon for people to comment like that. I am sure that once they get to see the film, they will realise that she is brilliant.”

Talking about the trailer and recent assets receiving flak, Sonia echoed Namit Malhotra’s sentiments and said it’s too soon to judge the film and one should wait for its release.

Sonia Balani revealed that she has been a fan of Ranbir Kapoor’s work and admitted to having a huge crush on the actor. She said she was “very biased” whenever he was on set, but clarified that her admiration goes beyond his looks and comes from his performances. She beamed, “He is so good in every character that he has played. So, I don’t know how people can doubt his calibre. He has proved himself with whatever he has done in the past.”

Talking about watching Ranbir transform into Ram during the shoot of Ramayana, Sonia said she could gradually see a change in his appearance and physique as he underwent intense preparation for it. “Gradually, during the shoot, I could see him becoming Ram. In 10-15 days, I could see a lot of change in his face and his physique,” she added.

On sharing screen space with Sai Pallavi

Sonia Balani recalled her first interaction with Sai Pallavi during the table reading for Ramayana and praised the actress for her simplicity and grounded persona. She said Sai arrived without makeup, dressed casually, which left a strong impression on her.

“We were doing a table reading, and I remember everyone looked great, including Sai Pallavi. But she was the only one who came without any makeup, just a normal tight ponytail, a shirt and denims. I was so impressed with her persona. This is the kind of simplicity I crave for in Bollywood, at times when everyone expects you to show off,” she said.

Sonia also praised Sai for being present and supportive on set, recalling a wedding sequence that required the actors to walk down several steps while wearing heavy lehengas.

“She is very present on set, I can say that, from whatever I have gauged. There was a scene during the wedding where we had to get down many steps in heavy lehengas. So, in a way, she was guiding everyone because we were scared that everyone might fall,” she remarked.

Sonia also addressed the criticism surrounding Sai’s Hindi accent and said she has seen a significant improvement in the actress’s performance.

“I think she has improved a lot. Trust me, I have seen her during the table reading and in the trailer. She has come a long way. I feel it’s very difficult because, even during The Kerala Story, we were told to pick up a Malayali accent, and it’s so difficult,” she signed off.

Makers unveil Ramayana`s first song

The song’s lyrics celebrate Shri Ram’s compassion, protection and unwavering adherence to dharma, while the repeated chanting of his name forms its devotional core. Sung by Arijit Singh and Shreya Ghoshal, the track features lyrics by Dr Kumar Vishwas and music by Oscar-winning composer A R Rahman.

Namit Malhotra, filmmaker and producer, said that Shri Ram lies at the heart of Ramayana and has, for generations, been a source of strength and guidance. He explained that ‘Jai Jai Ram’ comes from the deeply personal relationship devotees share with Shri Ram.

“While Ramayana is being created on a great scale, its true foundation lies in its emotion, its values and its devotion,” he said, adding that the team wanted the first song to reflect the soul of the film. According to Malhotra, Shri Ram is being presented not only as someone devotees worship, but also as a protector, guide and source of inner strength. He added that beginning the film’s musical journey on Ganesh Chaturthi was particularly meaningful as auspicious beginnings traditionally seek Lord Ganesha’s blessings.

All about the song

Rahman said the song is built around the “simple and powerful repetition” of Shri Ram’s name. The composer said the intention was to retain the purity and intimacy of a prayer while allowing the composition to evolve into a cinematic song. He also praised Arijit and Shreya for bringing their distinct emotional expressions to Kumar Vishwas’ lyrics while keeping the devotional essence intact.

Kumar Vishwas described ‘Jai Jai Ram’ as three simple words that contain an entire prayer. He said his aim was not to describe Shri Ram, but to express the relationship devotees share with him as their guide, strength and refuge. He added that the language was deliberately kept simple so that listeners could discover their own prayer within the song.

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, the film stars Ranbir Kapoor as Shri Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, Sunny Deol as Hanuman and Ravie Dubey as Lakshman. Produced by Namit Malhotra’s Prime Focus Studios with DNEG and Yash’s Monster Mind Creations, Ramayana Part One will release in cinemas during Diwali 2026.

Pierce Brosnan has a cinematic moment at US Open

The actor was among the high-profile guests at Arthur Ashe Stadium as Alexander Zverev took on American tennis star Ben Shelton in the final. However, it was not just the action on the court that caught viewers’ attention. At one point during the broadcast, the match clock showed 0:07 before the camera smoothly transitioned to Brosnan, who was seated in the audience.

The timing was enough to send social media into a frenzy. With Brosnan famously playing British secret agent James Bond, also known as Agent 007, the connection was almost impossible to miss. The official US Open account shared the clip online, further fuelling the reaction.

Fans quickly praised the camera operator for what appeared to be an almost scripted tribute to the actor’s most iconic role. One social media user called the moment “007,” while another praised the “awesome timing”. Several others described the sequence as “absolute cinema”, with some joking that Brosnan looked as though he was waiting for his next Bond assignment.

On Friday, paring most of its initial losses, the rupee settled at 95.54 against the US dollar, down by 2 paise, amid an easing in crude oil prices and possible Reserve Bank of India (RBI) intervention, according to news agency PTI.

At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at 95.70 against the US dollar and declined further to 95.79. However, the Indian currency recovered to close down by 2 paise at 95.54 against the American currency. The rupee had depreciated 44 paise to close at 95.52 against the US dollar on Thursday.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 930.90 crore on a net basis on Friday. However, as per the RBI data on Friday, India`s forex reserves surged USD 44.903 billion to a scale a lifetime high of USD 785.706 billion during the week ended September 4.

Bank Holiday on September 14

According to the RBI website, banks will remain closed on account of Ganesh Chaturthi/Ganesh Puja/Varasiddhi Vinayaka Vrata/Vinayakar Chathurthi/Hartalika. However, it is not a national holiday and only some states including Maharashtra have a bank holiday. The states where it is bank holiday are Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Telangana.

Stock trading holiday on September 14

According to the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) the stock market will remain closed for trading on Monday, September 14 in observance of Ganesh Chaturthi. Investors would be unable to purchase or sell equities, equity derivatives, as the festival is part of the holiday calendar for both BSE and NSE. 

On Friday, the 30-share BSE Sensex dropped 120.83 points or 0.16 per cent to end at 74,781.76. The 50-share NSE Nifty slipped 79.70 points or 0.34 per cent to settle at 23,398.10.

Besides, in the commodity market, as per the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) the morning session between 9 am to 5 pm will remain closed for trading on account of Ganesh Chaturthi, while it will resume its operations in the evening at 5 pm. 

Significance of Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi, is one of the most widely celebrated festivals among Hindus. The occasion marks the birth of Lord Ganesha, who is revered as the remover of obstacles and the God of wisdom and prosperity. The festival is marked by spiritual rituals and lively celebrations.

The current stock stands lower than in the same period last year, when the reservoirs contained 14,28,613 million litres (98.70 per cent). Also, the lake levels remained lower than in 2024, when the lakes had 14,26,486 million litres, accounting for 98.56 per cent of the total live storage. 

Vihar and Tulsi lake full

Among the seven reservoirs, Vihar and Tulsi lake remained at 100 per cent live storage. Whereas the water levels at Tansa at 98.69 per cent, Middle Vaitarna was at 96.92 per cent, Bhatsa, the city`s largest reservoir at 99.27 per cent, while Upper Vaitarna remained the lowest-filled lake at 93.20 per cent.

The current storage in individual lakes is as follows:

• Upper Vaitarna: 2,11,618 million litres (93.20 per cent)
• Modak Sagar: 1,20,956 million litres (93.82 per cent)
• Tansa: 1,43,181 million litres (98.69 per cent)
• Middle Vaitarna: 1,87,572 million litres (96.92 per cent)
• Bhatsa: 7,11,824 million litres (99.27 per cent)
• Vihar: 27,698 million litres (100 per cent)
• Tulsi: 8,046 million litres (100per cent)

Other rainfall recorded at the reservoirs includes:

The Bhandup Complex recorded a cumulative seasonal rainfall of 2,883 mm.

• Tansa – 2,921 mm

Reservoirs at their full capacity

The report stated that Vihar Lake has been overflowing since July 7. However, the capacity of Tansa Dam has decreased, which had been overflowing till August 22. On the other hand, the water level of Modak Sagar Dam has also decreased marginally on August 23.

Meanwhile, the Middle Vaitarna WSCPO gate remains closed, and the release of water from Upper Vaitarna has remained suspended since July 6, according to the Hydraulic Engineer`s Department.

"I am a part of the film because I watched the film"

While speaking exclusively to Mid-Day, Sonali shared that, in recent times, she would love to be part of a film like Dhurandhar, revealing that she was deeply impressed by Ranveer Singh`s performance and Aditya Dhar`s vision as a director. 

"I loved Dhurandhar. I loved every bit of it. I am a part of the film because I have watched it. I have applauded the film and tried to complement everyone involved. I loved the music, direction, casting, editing, and performances. No doubt about it," she said.

"You never realised there is a director"

Sonali believed director Aditya Dhar let the storytelling take centre stage rather than drawing attention to himself. She felt his vision, narrative, and technical aspects elevated the film`s overall quality.

She added, "You never realised there is a director behind the film. You feel that this is how the story was meant to unfold, and I think that`s the strongest point of the film. He has uplifted the film so much, and the storytelling is incredibly strong. You can`t even imagine how much thought has gone into it. I am not one of those audience members who cannot appreciate a good film or refuses to accept a climax or ending they don`t like. I believe every ending is a director`s choice."

"One film can have 10-20 different endings, but at that particular time the director felt `, I want to end the story like this.` So, either way, if I like something, I really like it. With Dhurandhar, I think I simply liked it. It`s very difficult for every actor to bring out that intensity and convey it through their eyes. I remember so many shots in the film. Hats off to Ranveer," Sonali concluded.

Dhurandhar earned praise from South, found less love in Bollywood?

The Dhurandhar franchise grossed over Rs 3200 crore worldwide combined, with Dhurandhar Part 2 alone surpassing Rs 1800 crore globally. The film became the first Hindi release to surpass the milestone without the additional boost from China. Despite the film shattering every Bollywood box-office record, many fans had complained that the Hindi film industry remained `silent` on the film. The loudest praise came from the South, be it from filmmakers like SS Rajamouli and Nag Ashwin or superstars like Nagarjuna and Rajinikanth. Within Bollywood, Karan Johar, Alia Bhatt, and Akshay Kumar were among the A-listers to have appreciated the film. The three Khans- Shah Rukh, Salman and Aamir Khan did not comment on the success of the film. 

Naturally, fans began wondering why Bollywood`s biggest stars have not acknowledged the franchise`s remarkable success. While the claim may be an exaggeration, it was enough to fuel the conversation.

She took a walk down the memory lane, as she spoke about bringing Lord Ganpati home during the 1st year of her marriage to actor Rohit Roy.

She further mentioned, “One such year as I had stood there doing Aarti I had taken a mannat (vow) that I would bring him home when I got married. And so that one time he came to our house in the 1st year of my marriage in 1999. It felt beautiful & right, holy & spiritual. Many years passed after that & he has retained his special place in my temple & my heart. In 2008, my 6 year old daughter came home the day before Ganesh Chaturthi demanding to know why we weren`t getting Ganu home? My brother in law had been bringing him home since many years & she had just come back from their house where all the preparations were in full swing. This had excited her & she wanted all that festivity in her house too”.

“So like any indulgent parents we decided to bring HIM home that year. Off we rushed to choose the Murti , the decorator was called, sweets, flowers & fruits ordered, friends & relatives invited & we were ready to welcome him home. And somewhere in our hearts we were glad that she had insisted we bring him home because we wanted to have his presence in our house too. We loved the festivity & the fervour that went on for these 10 days. And I always felt a deep sense of gratitude when I stood in front of him. During the 1st Aarti I`d inevitably get tears in my eyes”, she added.

States where the banks would be closed for operations

As per the Reserve Bank of India`s website, banks will remain closed on account of Ganesh Chaturthi/Ganesh Puja/Varasiddhi Vinayaka Vrata/Vinayakar Chathurthi/Hartalika. Online banking to remain open

The essential banking services will remain open for customers through digital banking facilities. While the physical branches will remain closed for operations, customers can use online banking systems for transaction purposes. Customers can generate account statement, request for cheque books through the digital banking channels. Customers can also use Unified Interface Payments (UPI) or transact through their bank apps. For banking facilities such as opening a fixed deposit, opening a recurring deposit, deposit into public provident fund (PPF) account, transfer of funds to another account, can all be done through net banking or mobile banking. Besides, customers can also pay bills through the UPI apps. For cash withdrawals, Automated Teller Machines (ATMS) can be used as these are expected to remain fully functional. Customers can also deposit money into their account using Cash Deposit Machine (CDMs).

In-bank services will be closed

Customers who wish to make large withdrawals or deposits might encounter problems. Besides, cheque clearances will not take place and you will have to wait for the bank branches to open on Tuesday for this purpose. In addition, demand drafts, certain account-related requests, loan-related processing, bank locker operations and other over-the-counter services will be affected. 

Nationwide bank strike on September 11

In states including Maharashtra where it is a bank holiday on September 14, it would mark the fourth consecutive day of disruption in banking services of some banks, as there was a nationwide bank strike on September 11, where all the 12 public sector banks, old generation private sector banks and regional rural banks participated in the strike.

Private sector lenders such as ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, HDFC Bank were open for services on Friday. But all the banks will remain closed on Ganesh Chaturthi wherever it is a bank holiday, as per the RBI holiday calendar.

What is Ganesh Chaturthi?

Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi, is one of the most widely celebrated festivals among Hindus. The occasion marks the birth of Lord Ganesha, who is revered as the remover of obstacles and the God of wisdom and prosperity. The festival is marked by spiritual rituals and lively celebrations.

According to the Hindu calendar, Ganesh Chaturthi is observed on the fourth day (Chaturthi) of the Shukla Paksha of the Bhadrapada month, which usually falls in August or September as per the Gregorian calendar.

It all started following an episode of Herpes Zoster Encephalitis, a serious infection and inflammation of the brain caused by the varicella-zoster virus, that required 10 days of ventilation, when he developed progressive breathing difficulties that began affecting his everyday life. His family consulted several doctors across Mizoram and other parts of eastern India and was advised surgery that could potentially require prolong ICU stay. Hesitant after his previous critical illness, the family sought another option and was eventually referred to the Department of Pulmonology at Manipal Hospitals Mukundapur in Kolkata where he was treated under the care and supervision of Dr. Angshuman Mukherjee, senior consultant - Pulmonary Medicine Specialist.  

The teen`s illness was previously complicated by aspiration pneumonia, and over time he developed shortness of breath and stridor, a harsh, high-pitched sound caused by narrowing of the upper airway. A CT scan of the thorax confirmed post-intubation stenosis, with evaluation revealing nearly 70 per cent narrowing of the airway across multiple layers. Given the extent of the narrowing and his previous experience with prolonged hospitalisation, the medical team opted for a minimally invasive bronchoscopic approach instead of conventional surgery.

Under the expert supervision of Dr Mukherjee, the narrowed airway was accessed through a bronchoscope. Using an electrocautery knife, the stenotic layers were precisely cut open, following which the entire narrowed segment was dilated using a balloon. The procedure resulted in minimal blood loss. A check bronchoscopy performed the following day showed that the airway remained well dilated, allowing the patient to be discharged the next day.

Speaking about the case, Dr Mukherjee said, “He was a young patient who had already gone through a very difficult medical episode, including prolonged ventilation, and his family was understandably hesitant about undergoing another major surgery. His symptoms were a result of significant post-intubation airway narrowing, which was nearly 70 per cent across different layers. Through bronchoscopy, we were able to precisely open the narrowed segments using electrocautery and subsequently dilate the airway with a balloon. The minimally invasive approach allowed us to achieve the desired result with minimal blood loss and a very short hospital stay. Most importantly, seeing him breathe comfortably without stridor and return home the very next day was extremely gratifying.”

Sharing the familys experience, the teen`s father said, “After everything he had been through in 2025, we were very scared when we were told that he might need another surgery and could spend several days in the ICU. We had consulted doctors in Mizoram and other parts of eastern India but were still unsure about taking the next step. At Manipal Hospitals Mukundapur, we finally received an explanation and treatment approach that gave us confidence. Seeing him breathe normally again, without the harsh sound and difficulty he had been experiencing, has been a huge relief for our entire family. We are extremely grateful to Dr. Mukherjee and the entire team for helping him get back to his normal life.”

The teen`s recovery was uneventful, and he was discharged the following day in stable condition. At follow-up, he reported no breathing difficulty or stridor, marking a significant improvement in his breathing and overall quality of life. 

In Sivaganga district of Tamil Nadu, the annual Ganesh Chaturthi chariot procession at the renowned Karpaga Vinayagar Temple in Pillayarpatti drew thousands of devotees on Sunday.

The highlight of the celebrations was the special Chandanakappu, or sandalwood paste adornment, of Lord Karpaga Vinayagar, a unique ritual performed only once a year. The deity was ceremonially taken around the temple in a decorated temple car as part of the grand Therottam.

The festivities began at around 5 pm, when devotees pulled the temple chariot.

Women, children and young girls also participated enthusiastically in the procession as the decorated temple cars carrying Lord Karpaga Vinayagar and Chandikeswarar moved around the temple amid a vibrant devotional atmosphere.

The ten-day festival began on September 5 with the traditional flag-hoisting ceremony. On September 14, marking Ganesh Chaturthi, the celebrations will continue with Chaturthi Theerthavari, a sacred water ritual, at the temple tank.

Special worship and the offering of Mukkurni Modhagam will also be held.

Likewise, preparations for Ganesh Chaturthi are also underway in Thoothukudi, where Vinayagar idols are being prepared and transported to different parts of the district.

Members of various organisations were seen transporting idols from Thoothukudi city in vehicles for installation at designated locations. The idols were carefully loaded onto vehicles while following necessary safety measures, with special prayers and worship planned at the locations where they will be installed.

In Telangana, markets in Hyderabad have been witnessing increased activity ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi, with a wide variety of Lord Ganesha idols displayed for devotees.

Lingala Srikanth Goud, a Hyderabad resident, said his family and community have been installing Ganesha idols for the last four decades and had come to select an idol this year as well.

⿿We have been installing Ganesha idols for the last forty years. This year, too, we came to select an idol. I have never seen prices this high in my life. I am not sure of the reason, whether it is due to the war or some other factor, but the prices have skyrocketed. Idols we bought for Rs 4,000 to Rs 6,000 last year are now being quoted at Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000. The variety is good; the designs are excellent, modern, and smart, but the cost is high,⿝ he told ANI. 

In neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, Nellore district has also been decked up for the upcoming Vinayaka Chavithi celebrations, with Ganesh pandals set up at major junctions across the district.

Devotees said they were looking forward to celebrating the festival with great enthusiasm and prayed for the well-being, happiness and prosperity of everyone.

However, idol makers in Nellore said that business has declined significantly compared to previous years, indicating that rising costs and changing market conditions may be affecting sales despite the festive preparations.

Ganesh Chaturthi is a 10-day Hindu festival marking the birth of Lord Ganesha. Celebrations involve the installation of Ganesha idols at homes and public places, prayers and cultural programmes, culminating in the immersion of the idols.

This year, Ganesh Chaturthi will be observed on Monday, September 14.

He also said India is working towards becoming a global benchmark in landscape-level conservation.

The minister made these comments during a review of the conservation status of the Great Indian Bustard (GIB), grassland restoration and Project Cheetah.

At the event, Yadav also released the Gujarat Action Plan for GIB Conservation, prepared by the Wildlife Institute of India in collaboration with the Gujarat forest department.

He said the action plan provides a science-based roadmap to establish a minimum viable population of more than 30 birds and secure 200 sq. km to 500 sq. km of safe, contiguous habitat.

Yadav added that the immediate focus is on approximately 200 square kilometre.

On grassland restoration, the minister underlined the ecological importance of grasslands, which, he said, cover nearly 24 per cent of India`s land area but remain among the country`s most-degraded and under-conserved ecosystems.

Reviewing Project Cheetah, Yadav noted that India has established a growing population from 29 founder cheetahs, with the population now reaching 52 individuals, including 49 cubs born in the country.

He observed that the cub survival rate in the Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh, at around 68 per cent, significantly demonstrates the potential for successful population establishment under appropriate ecological conditions. 

According to the official holiday calendar issued by the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), the bourses will remain closed on Monday, September 14, 2026. As per the official statements, the exchanges will be closed on account of Ganesh Chaturthi. Investors cannot buy and sell shares during the regular trading window. Trading in equity derivatives will also remain closed on Monday. The trading activity on both the exchanges will resume on Tuesday, September 15.

Besides, in the commodity market, the Multi Commodity Exchange will also observe Ganesh Chaturthi and this will lead to partial disruption in services. According to the MCX, trading activity will remain closed in the morning session between 9 am to 5 pm but will resume in the evening session at 5 pm.

What happened to the markets last week?

Last week, the domestic equity benchmark indices extended losses for the fifth straight week amid a surge in global crude oil prices due to the heightened tensions between US and Iran. Analysts also pointed out that the booming activity in the primary markets with nearly 12 mainboard IPOs valued at over Rs 7000 crore during the week diverted the investor sentiment from the secondary market, weighing on the indices.

During the week, the Sensex tumbled 1,733.67 points or 2.27 per cent, while the Nifty slipped 499.60 points or 2.09 per cent. The benchmark indices declined on four out of the five days during last week. 

On Friday, the 30-share BSE Sensex dropped 120.83 points or 0.16 per cent to end at 74,781.76, while the 50-share NSE Nifty slipped 79.70 points or 0.34 per cent to settle at 23,398.10. 

What is Ganesh Chaturthi?

Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi, is one of the most widely celebrated festivals among Hindus. The occasion marks the birth of Lord Ganesha, who is revered as the remover of obstacles and the God of wisdom and prosperity. The festival is marked by spiritual rituals and lively celebrations.

According to the Hindu calendar, Ganesh Chaturthi is observed on the fourth day (Chaturthi) of the Shukla Paksha of the Bhadrapada month, which usually falls in August or September as per the Gregorian calendar.

"In the interests of consensus the regional meeting set for tomorrow in Salalah has been postponed," Al Busaidi said on X. "We remain committed to fostering dialogue that supports stability and lasting cooperation in our region," he added.

Confirming the meeting`s deferral in an interview with Iran`s official news agency IRNA, Mohammad Ali Bak, director general of the Persian Gulf at the Iranian Foreign Ministry, said it was postponed to another date at some regional countries` requests and based on a joint decision by Iran and Oman.

The official stressed that Iran is in close consultations with Oman to ensure the necessary arrangements and coordination regarding the appropriate time for holding the meeting, Xinhua News Agency reported.

Iran`s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei announced on Friday that Gulf littoral states` foreign ministers were scheduled to meet in Oman on Monday to exchange views on regional issues, including the Iran-Oman talks on designating safe routes in the Strait of Hormuz.

Speaking to media on Saturday, Baghaei said the gathering would "hopefully" be attended by foreign ministers from Gulf states as well as Iran and Iraq. Meanwhile, Iraq announced on Sunday a phased reopening of three major border crossings with neighbouring Iran, following administrative and technical reviews to enhance security and streamline border movement.

According to a statement by the Security Media Cell (SMC), affiliated with the Iraqi Joint Operations Command, the decision was made under the directives of Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi to upgrade organisational and technical infrastructure at the Shalamcheh, Mandali, and al-Sheeb border crossings.

Under the schedule, passenger travel through the al-Sheeb and Shalamcheh border crossings resumed at 6 am on Sunday, while commercial trade activities at Shalamcheh will resume on Monday, followed by Mandali on Tuesday and al-Sheeb on Thursday, the statement said.

The SMC emphasised that trade and passenger movement with Iran at the Zurbatiyah and al-Munthiriya crossings have remained unaffected and continue to operate around the clock.

Excerpts from the interview.

Which dish from this collaboration is your favourite?
My favourite is the Karelian Pie Kulcha, and what we were able to create with it. We combined a Finnish and Indian classic dish. I loved the technique of the tandoor. Most Indians are familiar with Kulcha, and Karelian Pie is what we Fins grow up eating at home. A Karelian Pie traditionally has a rye dough filled with rice porridge. So, we took that idea and made a kulcha dough, filling it with rice porridge. It was a fun connection between both cultures.

How did you approach Indian ingredients and flavours while creating this menu?
We brought in a lot of different ingredients, tasted them and tried to understand what India is about. You cannot fully understand it in a few weeks, but you can begin to get a sense of it.

The most important thing was to be curious — taste, try, try again. We made a lot of things that were nearly inedible! But through that process, we also found common ground between India and Scandinavia. What excites and surprises me most about Indian food culture is the variety of styles, textures and flavours. I loved working with its spices and flavours, and especially the colours. We don’t have that many colours in Scandinavian cuisine.

Karelian Pie Kulcha

What is one misconception you would like people to move away from with Nordic cuisine?
I hope people understand that Nordic cuisine is a wide landscape, with many different cultures coming together. It is not only about smoked salmon and dill. Apart from Scandinavia, we have influences from Central Europe and Russia.

Fave food in Mumbai 

It’s the Maharaja Bhog Thali. It was vegetarian food served in a casual setting, but there were so many flavours, colours and textures. I loved that it was a humble experience.

Noma lessons

The most beautiful thing I learned at Noma was to keep exploring and stay curious. Always be the person to ask questions, taste and experiment, and never be afraid to fail. When I was a young cook, I thought I knew everything about cooking. But the older I get, the more I realise that I know nothing [about cooking], which is alright. That is what keeps me moving and makes me want to explore new techniques and flavours.

When I came to India, I had no idea how to make dal or pani puri. I want to learn. That is the spirit in which I want to keep exploring the world. It’s about being like a baby. My son is 10 months old, and he is curious about everything. It’s a beautiful mindset for chefs to have.

According to police sources, he was apprehended in the Reengus area of Sikar after a special team tracked his movements through CCTV footage. A reward of Rs 25,000 had been announced for information leading to his arrest on Saturday.

According to sources, after fleeing Jaipur, Rahul travelled to Khatu Shyam Ji temple. He later checked into a hotel but, reportedly short of money, attempted to sell his ring. The hotelier allegedly refused to pay even Rs 500 for it. Rahul then left the hotel and reached Reengus, where police arrested him.

Police said the accused was identified with the help of CCTV footage after information was received that he was moving around Reengus. A special police team reportedly kept a watch near a hotel in the area.

When Rahul emerged from the hotel with a cloth covering his face, the team identified and apprehended him. Investigators believe he had been keeping his face covered to avoid being recognised.

Police received information about the murders around 10 a.m. on Friday. When the Kardhani police reached the house, they found the bodies of Geeta Jha (40) and her three daughters, namely Nandini (22), Radhika (17) and Girish alias Gauri (14).

Geeta`s body was found in a room on the first floor, while the bodies of the three daughters were found in two rooms on the ground floor. Police also recovered Rahul`s blood-stained clothes from the house. His mobile phone was found switched off at the scene.

According to sources, preliminary investigation indicates that Rahul was under heavy debt and that financial pressure may have been behind the killings. Police suspect that he allegedly mixed poison into food served to his wife and daughters.

Investigators believe Rahul later feared that they might survive. According to the preliminary account, he then brought a cement slab weighing around 10 kg and measuring approximately one-and-a-half feet from outside the house and allegedly attacked the victims while they were unconscious, repeatedly striking their heads and faces. After the alleged killings, he changed his blood-stained clothes and fled.

Police investigation has revealed that Rahul collected milk from the milkman at around 7 a.m. and prepared tea for his elderly father, Lakshminath Jha (85). He then reportedly told his father that he was going out and left the house. His subsequent movements were traced through CCTV footage, leading police teams to Reengus, where he was eventually arrested.

The accused is now in police custody, and investigators are expected to question him further about the sequence of events, the alleged motive and the circumstances surrounding the murders.
