The victims — Abdullah Dokadia (40), his wife Nasreen (35), and their daughters Ayesha (16) and Zainab (13) — died within hours after consuming watermelon at their home in Mogul Building on April 25.

FSL findings support toxic substance detection

The findings are consistent with reports from the Forensic Science Laboratory, which detected traces of the highly toxic rodenticide in both the viscera samples of the deceased and leftover watermelon pieces.

Earlier, hospital tests had ruled out bacterial infection or natural food poisoning, strengthening suspicions of deliberate poisoning.

Suspicion of deliberate poisoning

Forensic experts noted that zinc phosphide is an insoluble powder that does not dissolve in water. They also observed that, given the thick rind of watermelon, accidental contamination through agricultural sources appears highly unlikely.

Based on these findings, investigators from JJ Marg Police suspect that the poison may have been manually applied to the cut fruit.

Motive still unknown

While the cause of death has now been scientifically established, the motive behind the incident remains unclear.

Police have recorded statements from neighbours, relatives, and local vendors who were in contact with the family shortly before the deaths. No suicide note has been recovered, and there is no evidence so far of a suicide pact or identified suspect.

Investigators are now examining call detail records and other digital evidence to trace the possible source of the poison and determine whether foul play was involved.

Police said the case is being treated with high priority due to the unusual circumstances and the involvement of a toxic industrial chemical. Further forensic and digital analysis is underway.

The aim is to provide a platform for women facing difficulties and grievances, they said.

According to an official statement, the programme aims to help women present their complaints, seek guidance and receive support for the protection of their rights.

The event will take place at the Collector Office from 11 am to 1 pm, the District Women and Child Development Office said.

Officials stated that the initiative would help women receive guidance and assistance from government authorities regarding personal complaints and problems.

Application forms required for filing complaints are available at the District Women and Child Development Officer’s office located at 117 BBD Chawl, first floor, Worli, the statement said.

It said that the complaints must be submitted in the prescribed format and should be personal in nature.

Officials stated that court-related matters, applications without supporting documents, service and establishment-related issues, and complaints not submitted in the prescribed format will not be accepted during the programme.

The District Women and Child Development office had appealed to women to submit complete applications with all necessary documents.

‘Lokshahi Day’ on June 1 in Thane

Meanwhile, earlier, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) had stated that it will organise its next ‘Lokshahi Din (Public Grievance Day)’ on June 1, and has urged citizens to submit their applications and representations by May 18 to ensure their complaints are addressed.

According to the civic body, citizens must file their complaints at the municipal corporation headquarters or at the Citizen Facilitation Centre in two copies at least 15 days prior to the scheduled day. Each submission must be accompanied by Form-1(B), which will be made available at the facilitation centre.

The TMC has clarified that the process is being followed as per a Maharashtra government circular dated September 26, 2012. As per the guidelines, no complaints will be accepted on the day of Lokshahi Din itself. Citizens are required to submit their grievances in advance so that the concerned departments can study the issues and come prepared with proper replies.

In the return direction, Train No. 01008 Sawantwadi Road-Panvel Weekly Special will leave Sawantwadi Road at 7.20 hrs every Saturday during the same period and arrive at Panvel at 5 pm the same day.

The railway officials said bookings for Train No. 01007 are already open on special charges.

Reservations for Train No. 01105 will open from 16 May 2026 at all computerised reservation centres and on the IRCTC official website.

Passengers can also book unreserved tickets through the UTS system and use the RailOne app for ticket bookings and railway services, officials said.

They said that railways advice passengers to check detailed train timings and halt schedules on the National Train Enquiry System (NTES).

Review meeting held in Mumbai

The minister was speaking during a review meeting held at the Mumbai Suburban Collector Office.

The meeting was attended by Skill Development Minister and co-guardian minister of the district Mangal Prabhat Lodha, MLA Vikrant Patil, District Collector Saurabh Katiyar and officials from various departments.

Bawankule said the Revenue Department is directly connected to the daily needs of citizens and plays an important role in protecting public property rights.

He instructed local authorities to proactively visit different areas and solve citizens’ problems through proper planning instead of waiting for complaints to reach higher authorities.

The minister also stressed that essential services linked to ease of doing business should be provided quickly and pending cases should be resolved within fixed timelines.

Action against violations on govt land

The minister directed officials to take strict action in cases where conditions related to government land are violated and ensure such land is returned to government control when required.

He also said the government would support and appreciate officers carrying out innovative and efficient administrative work.

Review of various departments

During the meeting, District Collector Saurabh Katiyar gave a presentation on various ongoing works under the district administration.

The Maharashtra Revenue Minister also reviewed the functioning of the Registration Department, Land Records Department and Stamp Duty Office. He instructed officials to complete all pending works in a time-bound manner.

Bawankule backs PM Modi`s push to curb foreign imports

Meanwhile, earlier, Bawankule on Monday supported Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal promoting the use of indigenous products and reduced dependence on imports, describing the move as an important step towards strengthening India’s economy.

Speaking to reporters in Pune, Bawankule said the Prime Minister’s call for “Swadeshi” reflected the same spirit of self-reliance advocated by Mahatma Gandhi during the freedom movement, reported ANI.

The block will affect suburban and some long-distance train services between Thane, Kalyan, Panvel and Vashi, with several trains being diverted, delayed or cancelled during the day.

Main Line block between Thane and Kalyan

The mega block on the UP and DOWN fast lines between Thane and Kalyan will remain in place from 10.40 am to 3.40 pm.

During this period, Down fast and semi-fast services leaving Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) between 9.34 am and 3.03 pm will run on the slow line between Thane and Kalyan.

These trains will additionally halt at Kalva, Mumbra and Diva stations.

Services are expected to arrive around 10 minutes late.

Similarly, the UP fast and semi-fast services leaving Kalyan between 10.28 am and 3.40 pm will also be diverted via the slow line.

These trains will stop at Diva, Mumbra and Kalva before being redirected again at Mulund.

Passengers can expect delays of approximately 10 minutes.

Mail and Express trains to be diverted

Several Mail and Express trains will also face route diversions during the block period.

Down Mail and Express trains departing from CSMT or Dadar will operate via the 5th line between Thane and Kalyan.

UP Mail and Express trains arriving towards CSMT or Dadar will use the 6th line between Kalyan and Thane.

Harbour Line services to remain cancelled

A separate mega block will be carried out on the UP and DOWN Harbour lines between Panvel and Vashi from 11.05 am to 4.05 pm. The Port Line will remain operational.

The following services will remain cancelled during the block:

Harbour Line

- UP services towards CSMT leaving Panvel between 10.33 am and 3.49 pm

- DOWN services towards Belapur and Panvel leaving CSMT between 9.45 am and 3.12 pm

Trans-Harbour Line

Special services arranged for passengers

Central Railway said special local trains will operate between CSMT Mumbai and Vashi during the block period to reduce inconvenience to commuters.

Trans-Harbour services between Thane and Vashi/Nerul stations will also continue operating.

Railway officials said the maintenance work is necessary for infrastructure safety and upkeep and appealed to passengers to cooperate during the disruption.

The admissions will cover diploma programmes in Engineering and Technology as well as Architecture.

Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil directed the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) to conduct the process in a planned and time-bound manner.

Speaking about the importance of technical education, Patil said diploma courses provide students with opportunities to become technicians, engineers and entrepreneurs.

He noted that students can complete a three-year diploma programme after Class 10 and directly enter industry or continue higher education.

The minister also said several diploma students have received campus placement offers with salaries reaching up to Rs 1 lakh per month, making technical education an attractive career option.

Updated curriculum under NEP 2020

The Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education (MSBTE) has introduced an updated “K Scheme” curriculum aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

The revised curriculum follows an outcome-based credit system consisting of six semesters and 120 credits. Students will also have the option to study and appear for examinations in both English and Marathi.

New-age technology subjects added

The updated syllabus includes subjects aimed at overall personality and skill development, including Soft Skills, Social and Life Skills, Entrepreneurship, Yoga, Indian Knowledge System, Environment and Sustainability Management and Startups. 

The curriculum also introduces emerging technology subjects such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning
Robotics, Internet of Things (IoT), Drone Technology, Python Programming, Cloud Computing, Data Analytics, EV Technology, 5G Technology, UI/UX Designing, Green Building and Energy Conservation, Practical Training and Skill Development.

Industrial training duration has been increased from six weeks to 12 weeks. The state has also included micro projects in every semester and a capstone project in the final semester to improve practical learning.

Officials said student credits will be stored digitally through the Academic Bank of Credits under the National Academic Depository framework.

Additional set up

MSBTE has additionally set up:

- 9 Centres of Excellence in Robotics, IoT and 3D Printing

- 41 Multipurpose Computer Centres

- 5 E-Yantra Labs to strengthen technical skills among students.

Diploma admissions rise to 95 per cent

According to the department, admission rates in diploma courses have increased significantly from 80 per cent in 2022-23 to 95 per cent in 2025-26 due to curriculum reforms and skill-focused initiatives.

Students have been advised to visit the official Directorate of Technical Education website for detailed admission schedules and registration procedures.

The action follows the reported death of a woman allegedly linked to one such bike taxi service.

According to officials, the notices were issued after a complaint by Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, who stated that bike taxi operations run through these platforms are illegal under the Motor Vehicles Act.

They said that a criminal case has already been registered in connection with the woman’s death, while similar incidents involving bike taxi services are reportedly increasing across Maharashtra.

Legal warning under IT Act

In the notice signed by Sanjay Shintre, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Maharashtra Cyber invoked Section 79(3)(b) of the Information Technology Act.

Officials stated that the provision removes legal immunity for platforms once they are officially informed about unlawful activity taking place through their services.

The notice further warned that both Google and Apple, due to their business presence in India, could face direct liability in case of future incidents if no action is taken.

The cyber police also raised concerns over inadequate driver verification, lack of proper insurance coverage, weak safety measures for women passengers and negligent riding practices.

Officials said these operational issues were among the major reasons behind the crackdown on bike taxi services.

The development marks a major escalation in Maharashtra’s action against app-based bike taxi operators.

Manoj Kumar Sharma gets key posting

Manoj Kumar Sharma, whose life story inspired the film 12th Fail, has been appointed as Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), Mumbai.

His journey from poverty to becoming an IPS officer was documented in Twelfth Fail, written by Anurag Pathak. The book was later adapted into the 2023 film 12th Fail, directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, with Vikrant Massey portraying Sharma. The film went on to receive widespread critical praise.

A 2005-batch IPS officer, Sharma had earlier served as DCP Zone 1 and Additional Commissioner of Police (West Region) in Mumbai.

Senior officers promoted

Joint Commissioner of Police, Economic Offences Wing (EOW), Nishit Mishra and Joint Commissioner of Police (Administration) Jai Kumar were promoted to the rank of Special Inspector General of Police, according to the PTI.

Several senior officers holding the rank of Special IGP, including Datta Karale, Pravin Padwal, Manoj Sharma and Suvez Haque, were also given new postings, the news agency reported.

Transfers of additional CPs and DCPs

Two Additional Commissioners of Police in Mumbai — Mahesh Patil and Paramjit Singh Dahiya — were transferred as part of the changes.

Three Deputy Commissioners of Police, namely Dixit Gedam, Pravin Munde and Krishnkant Upadhyay, were also shifted to new assignments.

Rajesh Pradhan, a 2003-batch IPS officer, has been appointed as the head of Mumbai Police’s Economic Offences Wing (EOW), reported the PTI.

Officials said the reshuffle was aimed at strengthening administrative efficiency and law enforcement operations across Maharashtra.

In an exclusive conversation with mid-day, the couple opened up about staying locked inside the palace for 26 days and how much they missed their little one during the journey. Prince admitted that being separated from their daughter was incredibly hard for both of them.

“This was the most difficult thing for us. I was counting the days. When these 26 days will end and we will go and meet her,” Prince shared emotionally. Recalling the moment the show wrapped, he added, “When my show ended at night, I ran away first to see her. We were counting every minute.”

Yuvika agreed and revealed how both of them constantly spoke about reuniting with their daughter. Despite the distance, the couple felt grateful that their daughter handled the separation maturely. “But we are blessed to have her. How beautifully she managed,” Prince added.

The actor further explained that their daughter found adorable ways to stay connected with them emotionally even while they were away. “She used to take our photo and talk to us. ‘Oh mom, dad,’” he revealed with a smile.

The conversation also turned lighter when the couple spoke about their daughter’s bond with Prince. Yuvika laughed and shared, “And she loves his songs. She doesn’t listen to anyone else’s songs.” Prince jokingly reacted, “She is a big fan.” Yuvika then teased him by calling their daughter “your daddy’s girl.”

Apart from the emotional challenge of being away from family, the duo also reflected on returning to a reality show together after a long gap. Prince revealed that he mainly agreed to participate because he wanted Yuvika to experience the format with him once again.

“I did it for her basically. I wanted her to do a reality show again and with me because she didn’t do it with me for a long time,” he explained. Others, however, felt the comparison was awkward or unnecessary, especially given the rapper’s recent controversies and ongoing scrutiny following his feud with Kendrick Lamar.

Some ARMYs defended the lyric, saying Drake appeared to be praising BTS for achieving worldwide fame after years of hard work. Supporters pointed out that BTS spent nearly a decade building their international reputation before becoming one of the biggest music acts globally. Many fans also highlighted that Drake and BTS had interacted positively in the past, including their 2019 meeting at the Billboard Music Awards.

Despite the divided reactions, the lyric succeeded in generating massive online engagement globally. Social media timelines were flooded with memes, debates, fan edits, and think pieces analysing whether the BTS comparison was flattering, confusing, or simply another headline-grabbing Drake moment.

The decision was officially notified by the state finance department on Thursday under the Maharashtra Value Added Tax Act, 2002. According to the notification, the concession will remain in force until November 14. After this period, the previous tax rate of 18 per cent will be applicable unless the government extends or modifies the order.

"The amendment substitutes the existing 18 per cent tax rate with 7 per cent in Entry 6 of Schedule B appended to the Maharashtra Value Added Tax Act, 2002," the official notification stated.

The move is expected to significantly bring down fuel costs for airlines operating in the state, improve air connectivity, and enhance the overall competitiveness of airports in Maharashtra. Industry experts believe that lower ATF prices will encourage airlines to add more flights, especially on regional and international routes, giving a boost to both business travel and tourism.

However, the finance department has acknowledged that the tax concession will result in a revenue loss of around Rs 600 crore to the state exchequer during the six-month period.

Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal welcomed the decision and urged other states, particularly those ruled by the Congress, to follow Maharashtra’s example.

Speaking to reporters at SEEPZ in Mumbai on Friday, Goyal said, “I hope that the few states where the Congress continues to be in power — Karnataka, Kerala and Telangana — will also look into this (ATF) issue and take up the challenge of undertaking pro-people measures.”

He congratulated Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for taking the step, saying it would reduce air freight charges, help exporters explore new markets, and attract more tourists to the state. Goyal described the decision as a forward-looking move that aligns with the Centre’s efforts to support the aviation and logistics sectors.

He also addressed the Rs 3 per litre fuel price hike announced earlier in the day and said people should welcome the modest increase under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, especially as there were widespread rumours of a much steeper hike of over Rs 15 per litre.

On the broader issue of austerity measures suggested by Prime Minister Modi, Goyal clarified that these are voluntary in nature.

“He has made an appeal, he has made a request and I am sure all of you also will be having a feeling for the country — that patriotism — that we must all contribute to nation building,” he stated. “This is the time when there is a crisis when we all tighten our belt,” the Union minister added.

He was heard saying, “Dhurandhar released in Pakistan today itself, and the server crashed almost immediately. Pakistanis had been eagerly waiting for Netflix to drop the film at midnight so everyone could click and watch it together. That’s the level of craze Dhurandhar has generated here. Whether the film shows the truth or not is a different matter, but people in Pakistan are curious to see how the movie has been made. Everyone already has an idea about Ranveer Singh’s character. Whether such incidents actually happened in Lyari or not is a separate debate.”

To note, after its release on March 19, the pirated version of Ranveer Singh’s film was available in Pakistan. The Dhurandhar franchise, directed by Aditya Dhar and fronted by Ranveer Singh, has built a strong fan following due to its scale, action sequences, and storytelling. Reports suggest that both films have earned more than Rs 3000 crore globally.
