Former All India Football Federation (AIFF) general secretary Kushal Das, who played a vital role in organising the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup in India, died at the age of 65 on Friday. Das held the role of general secretary for 12 years before retiring in 2022.

Donald Trump warns Iran against participating at the World Cup

The Iranian national football team`s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup was earlier encouraged by Donald Trump, but he cautioned them to "not be there for their own life and safety."

In a post on Truth Social, the US President said, "The Iranian National Soccer Team is welcome to The World Cup, but I really don`t believe it is appropriate that they be there, for their own life and safety."

According to Al Jazeera, Trump`s remarks were made just one day after Iranian Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali declared that the nation could not compete in the 2026 FIFA World Cup because the United States had assassinated Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the country`s supreme leader.

"Considering that this corrupt regime [the US] has assassinated our leader, under no circumstances can we participate in the World Cup," Ahmad Donyamali told state television, according to the report.

Mehdi Taj, president of the Football Federation of Iran, had also said earlier that Iran cannot be expected to look forward to the 2026 FIFA World Cup with optimism following the recent assaults.

Iran`s football squad was scheduled to play its first of three group play matches at the World Cup on 15 June in Los Angeles against New Zealand. The Iran team were placed together in a group with New Zealand, Belgium and Egypt.

"What has happened in the past few months shows that the conditions for our national football team to participate in the World Cup do not exist, and this team will not participate in the upcoming event," Donyamali said in a statement, according to IRNA.

"A rogue country is hosting the World Cup," Donyamali said in a separate statement to the semi-official Iranian Students` News Agency on Wednesday, adding that "we expect FIFA to react to this."

"Given that a corrupt government has come and assassinated our leader, we are not in a position to attend the World Cup. Our team members have no security at all to attend the World Cup." Donyamali stated, according to ISNA. 

The 2026 World Cup will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with games taking place across three of these North American countries. All three nations have qualified as host nations.

President Trump `welcomes` Iran to play at the World Cup 2026

Despite the current conflict in the Middle East, US President Donald Trump will "welcome" Iran`s participation in the forthcoming World Cup in North America, the White House announced on Wednesday.

Iran`s participation in this summer`s men`s football World Cup, which is jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States, has been called into question due to the conflict, which was started by US-Israeli strikes on February 28.

According to FIFA President Gianni Infantino," President Trump reiterated that the Iranian team is, of course, welcome to compete in the tournament in the United States" during a meeting to review competition preparations.

Trump`s recent remarks to Infantino are opposite to his comments last week when he said, "I really don`t care" if Iran plays at the World Cup.

Ascend started on the front foot and dominated the early exchanges. Their first chance came in the fourth minute when Aveer Kothari found himself in a promising position close to goal, but Campion goalkeeper Arjun Talwar Khiani reacted swiftly to produce a fine save.

Ascend continued to press and looked the more attacking side in the opening half. Martina Thokchom miscued a clearance in her half, as the ball rolled onto JW Chen on the right. Sanju managed to intercept it in time and attempted to play it back to Panthoi. However, the fullback`s pass lacked conviction and fell into the path of JW Chen, who promptly squared it to YH Su to tap it into an empty net.

India still needed to score twice, as a 2-1 win would also have been enough.. A 26th-minute Pyari cross into the box saw Sanfida Nongrum charge at the near post, but she only managed to collide with the opposition keeper.

India finally levelled the score when they got a free-kick some 25 yards out. Huang Ke-sin`s off-the-ball push on Soumya in the 38th minute got the Video Assistant Referee into action, as a possible red card offence was being checked. However, the VAR deemed the referee`s original decision of a yellow card to Huang was correct.

A minute later, Manisha produced a thunderous free-kick that struck the underside of the crossbar and bounced out of play, before being cleared. The VAR was once again called upon, and a goal was soon awarded to India, who had levelled the score.

Panthoi, who has made numerous saves in the Asian Cup, pulled off another blinder in the first- half injury-time, when YC Chen`s powerful effort struck the onrushing India goalkeeper on the face. While the immediate danger was averted, disaster struck a minute later, when Chinese Taipei were awarded a penalty. YY Hsu, who stepped up, however, only managed to hit the woodwork. However, the ball struck the back of Panthoi, who had dived in the correct direction, and rolled over the line for Chinese Taipei to take the lead once more.

A goal behind, India started the second half with greater intent once again, as Rimpa Haldar replaced Soumya Guguloth. Manisha, who drifted wide on the right, cut inside and pulled the trigger, only to see it sail wide.

At the other end, captain Sweety Devi Ngangbam made a crucial block off a YH Su shot, minutes before Panthoi pulled off a brilliant save once again, this time denying the attacker, who was through on goal.

However, India`s repeated attempts to get back on level terms ended up being their undoing. YY Hsu played YC Chen through behind the India back-four, as the latter rounded Panthoi and scored in an empty goal. Panthoi, while charging at Chen, collided with Sweety, and both players had to be stretchered off.

India had a few chances in the closing stages, with Sanfida having her 86th-minute volley blocked by Teng Pei-lin, while Manisha`s 89th-minute free-kick took a deflection before substitute goalkeeper Chen Ssu-yu swiped it away. The Chinese Taipei substitute keeper, in the last minute of regulation time, had to make yet another save off a Manisha free-kick.

The India forward looked destined to score a second goal, and a minute later, she managed to get a free header onto a Kaviya Pakkirisamy corner, only to see it thud onto the upright.

Ascend made a bright start and took the lead early in the sixth minute through Aushim Sagar. His attempt from outside the area slipped past Bombay Scottish goalkeeper Kabir Vora, who fumbled while trying to collect the ball, giving the BKC side a 1-0 lead. The Mahim outfit tried to respond and pushed forward in search of the equaliser. However, Ascend’s defence stayed compact and denied them clear chances. Despite their efforts, Scottish were unable to break through as Ascend carried the 1-0 advantage into the halftime break.

On resumption, the Mahim outfit tried to press for the equaliser but struggled to create clear chances as Ascend’s defence remained compact. With four minutes remaining, Nivaan Virani sealed the victory with a neat placement into the right side of the goal.

The first game of the week was Liverpool`s visit to Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Reds lost their last match against the same opponent in the Premier League, but looked back to their best this time.

Manchester City come from behind to beat Newcastle United 

Manchester City continued their recent good form as they came from behind to beat Newcastle United at St. James Park. Newcastle were fresh off beating City`s neighbours, United, but faultered against Pep Guardiola`s side.

Newcastle United took the lead through Harvey Barnes, but one goal from Savinho and a brace from Marmoush were enough to send Man City through to the next round.

The Brazilian stood still and appeared to let the ball bounce off his leg into the net. Soon after the restart Manchester City completed the turnaround when Omar Marmoush smashed the ball into the roof of the goal from close range. The Egyptian forward then thundered home his second in the 65th minute to put his team in total control.

Guardiola, whose team travel to face Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday, turned to a bench packed with international talent in the second half to refresh his side, who are seeking to reach their fourth straight FA Cup final. "In Leverkusen, it was a strong squad too (a 2-0 defeat for a much-changed side), but we won today, so it was fine," Guardiola told the BBC. "It was a good decision and when I lose it was a bad decision. "This is the best performance we have played in this stadium since my decade here. That is consistency and that is why I am proud."

Chelsea scare

Chelsea are also into the last eight after a 4-2 win but only after a mighty scare against second-tier Wrexham, who twice took the lead at the Racecourse Ground. "We had to be at a high, high level. We were pushed all the way by a very good team." Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson, who has masterminded three straight promotions for his side, said they could take "a lot of heart" from the performance.

"We showed a lot of good aspects to our play and played some great football," he told the BBC. "We weren`t just coming here to stop Chelsea -- we believe we can play." Wrexham will now turn their attention to their push for a fourth straight promotion -- this time to the Premier League. In the first FA Cup match of the day, Eberechi Eze smashed home the winner as a much-changed Arsenal toughed out a win against Mansfield. Noni Madueke put the 14-time FA Cup winners ahead against the League One strugglers shortly before half-time, only for substitute Will Evans to level soon after the break. England forward Eze thumped home midway through the second half to restore Arsenal`s lead, minutes after being introduced by Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta.

Man Utd defend their decision to increase the ticket prices

Manchester United maintains that a 5% increase in Old Trafford ticket prices for the upcoming campaign will aid in their efforts to "return to the top of domestic and European football."

The club claims that higher ticket prices during the 2026–2027 season will enable them to make investments in facilities and football. United are chasing their first Premier League title since 2013.

"We have a clear objective to return Manchester United to the top of domestic and European football. We want to keep investing in the team and improving our facilities so fans get the best possible experience. We also need to make sure the club stays financially sustainable, taking into account inflation and rising costs," the club said in a statement.

"It is within this context that we have made the decision to increase season ticket prices by around five per cent across all areas of Old Trafford," the statement said.

After a rare season without playing in Europe, United is in a strong position to return to the Champions League as they sit third in the Premier League under interim head coach Michael Carrick.

"At present, there are no alternative venues being considered," UEFA said on Thursday about the scheduled March 27 game in Doha between the reigning champions of South America and Europe in a likely match-up of Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal.

"A final decision is anticipated towards the end of next week," said the European soccer body which organises the game with South American counterpart CONMEBOL.

The Finalissima would be the first time Argentine great Lionel Messi faces Spanish prodigy Lamine Yamal. Yamal, who is currently donning the famous number 10 at Barcelona, has admitted in the past that Messi was his idol growing up.
