The procedure begins with students applying for scanned copies of their evaluated answer sheets.

Only after receiving these anwer sheets can they proceed to request verification of marks or re-evaluation of specific questions.

This system is designed to maintain transparency and give students confidence in the evaluation process.

This year, CBSE has introduced the On-Screen Marking system on a larger scale, aimed at reducing human error and improving efficiency.

However, several students reported issues such as blurred scanned copies and skipped markings, which led to a significant rise in re-evaluation requests.

More than seventy thousand applications have already been filed, reflecting the scale of demand and the importance of the extension.

The fee structure has also been revised to make the process more accessible.

Students are required to pay a nominal amount for verification and a per-question fee for re-evaluation.

Once the re-evaluation is completed, the marks awarded are final and binding, with no further appeal allowed.

The CBSE has urged students to take note of the revised schedule and submit their applications before the new deadline.

The Board has also activated its helpline to assist students and parents with queries, ensuring that the process remains smooth and supportive.

The extension is not just a logistical adjustment but also a reassurance to students that their concerns are being heard.

According to the weather department, an upper-air cyclonic circulation persists over coastal Karnataka and adjoining regions at an altitude of 3.1 km to 4.5 km above mean sea level.

The southwest monsoon has further advanced into the remaining parts of the southwest and southeast Arabian Sea, sections of the west-central and east-central Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep, parts of Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, as well as large areas of the Bay of Bengal.

Under its influence, light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms is likely at isolated places across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on Saturday.

The pilot immediately returned the aircraft to the bay for precautionary checks after the accidental hit on Friday. Engineers conducted the inspection and cleared the aircraft for the operations.

Nearly 25 people, all belonging to a close-knit family from Jalabad village, were travelling to a religious place Beas in Amritsar district to perform the last rites of a family member.

The accident occurred on the Ferozepur-Fazilka road at around at 5.40 A.M. The collision between the pick-up vehicle and the truck was so massive that the former was dragged and damaged massively.

The police, passersby and local residents had to tear down mangled remains to take out several occupants who were trapped inside the vehicle.

Four occupants of the pick-up vehicle were killed on the spot, while four succumbed to injuries on the way to hospital.

Ferozepur Senior Superintendent of Police Rajinder Singh told the media that the victims were travelling to Beas to immerse the ashes of a deceased relative in the Beas River. He said most of the victims belonged to a close-knit family.

“The cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained,” he said, adding the injured were transported to the Civil Hospital in Ferozepur by ambulance.

Dr Nikhil Gupta, Senior Medical Officer at the Civil Hospital, said that several critically injured people were referred to Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital in Faridkot for further treatment.

Eyewitnesses said the truck driver lost control over the vehicle and rammed into the pick-up vehicle and dragged it several metres. The postmortem of the deceased is underway.

Upon receiving news of the accident, a Road Safety Force team and half a dozen ambulances arrived at the scene to rush the injured to the hospital. The occupants of the pick up were traveling from Jalalabad West to Dera Beas when the accident took place close to Janganwala morh.

Elsewhere, at least eight people were injured when a bus, on its way from Delhi to Manali, met with an accident on the national highway in Haryana`s Karnal district, police said on Saturday.

After a similar case was exposed in Shirur taluka in March, authorities have now found evidence of the same method during a recent crackdown in the Yavat area of Daund taluka.

How it works

According to the health officials, a portable sonography probe is connected to a mobile application through Wi-Fi, enabling sonography scans to be conducted using a smartphone. Investigations indicate that the technology was used in some cases.

Health officials on alert

Following the latest revelations, the health department has launched inspections of all sonography centres, private hospitals, primary health centres, and Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) centres in Daund taluka. Authorities have been directed to submit detailed inspection reports within two days.

‘Please ban the app’

Health officials said that after the Shirur operation, the Pune district civil surgeon had written to the state government seeking a ban on the mobile application allegedly being used for such illegal activities. The department has now reiterated its demand for stricter regulation.

Focus on five districts

Investigations and enforcement actions carried out over the past few years have revealed that such activities are operating across five districts — Pune, Ahilyanagar, Dharashiv, Satara, and Solapur. Officials have therefore been instructed to maintain close surveillance in these districts and strengthen inter-departmental coordination to curb the practice.

"We will examine their request if and when they seek permission," a senior police officer said.

According to police sources, authorities became aware of the proposed protest primarily through social media posts and online messages circulated by the Abhijeet Dipke-led outfit. No formal communication seeking permission has been received so far, they added.

Police said they are closely monitoring the situation and have initiated preliminary security arrangements in view of the proposed gathering.

Senior Delhi Police officers held a high-level review meeting on Friday to assess preparedness ahead of the protest call. All district units have been placed on standby, while further decisions will be taken based on intelligence inputs and developments on the ground, sources said.

Officials described the situation as "dynamic", with assessments being carried out at multiple levels.

Delhi Police monitoring social media posts linked to protest call

"The only information available to us at present is what has been circulating on social media. No permission request has been received so far," a police source said.

Delhi Police generally requires prior permission for demonstrations and public gatherings. Officials said it would be premature to comment on any specific action at this stage, adding that security deployment and preventive measures would depend on the evolving situation.

Sources said intelligence agencies are also examining reports suggesting possible support for the proposed protest from certain political groups. As part of the assessment, the role of several political leaders is also being reviewed, they added.

Police said additional personnel could be deployed in sensitive areas, if required, to maintain law and order.

Meanwhile, the CJP shared a video on X purportedly showing police arrangements in the area and claimed that barricades had been erected ahead of the proposed protest.

Dipke has called on supporters and students to gather at Jantar Mantar on June 6, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged examination-related lapses. He has also said that he would return from the United States to lead the protest.

Sonam Wangchuk extends support to proposed protest

Education reformer and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has expressed support for the demonstration, stating that he would join the protest if Pradhan did not step down by June 5.

The CJP was originally launched as a satirical online campaign and has since evolved into a larger movement that has attracted significant attention on social media.

The intensified operation was conducted under the guidance and directives of State Excise Commissioner Rajesh Deshmukh, Joint Commissioner (Enforcement and Vigilance) Prasad Surve, and Pune Divisional Deputy Commissioner Sagar Dhomkar.

Highlights of the crackdown

During the week-long operation, officials registered 142 cases and arrested 116 persons. They seized 8,472 litres of country liquor and 11,733 litres of non-duty-paid and spurious liquor sourced from other states. Authorities also destroyed 69,271 litres of chemical wash used in illicit liquor production and impounded 11 vehicles allegedly used for transportation.

Strict directives and preventive actions

Superintendent Kanade stated that instructions have been issued to completely dismantle all illegal distillation units operating in manufacturing and sales hotspots. Furthermore, raw material suppliers fuelling these illegal units are now being booked as co-accused in these crimes.

To deter repeat offenders, 125 proposals have been filed to execute good behaviour bonds under Section 93 of the Maharashtra Prohibition Act, 1949.

Inter-departmental coordination and CID investigation

The criminal case related to the suspected methanol liquor deaths has been transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). The State Excise Department, which had previously registered three cases related to the incident, is actively co-investigating the matter alongside the CID.

In a bid to intensify pressure on bootleggers, District Collector Gajanan Patil has initiated a multi-agency crackdown:

Demolition of illegal structures: The municipal commissioners of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, along with the chief officers of municipal councils and nagar panchayats, have been requested to demolish illegal structures at spots flagged for illicit liquor activities.

Public awareness: Garbage collection vans (`ghanta gadi`) will broadcast audio messages warning citizens about the fatal dangers of spurious liquor.

Tighter bonds: Sub-divisional magistrates and police commissioners of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) have been urged to enforce high-value monetary bonds under Section 93 against habitual offenders.

The notice has been issued to gram panchayat sarpanchs, gram sevaks and talathis to report local illegal manufacturing units and prevent the misuse of government land for illicit trades.

Electricity disconnections and supply chain crackdown

MSEDCL has been directed to disconnect electricity connections linked to persons allegedly involved in the illicit liquor trade. Additionally, jaggery traders suspected of supplying raw materials to bootleggers have been issued notices under Section 168.

Methanol regulation and surveillance

The Excise Department has coordinated with the Joint Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to obtain a comprehensive list of all authorised methanol licence holders and suppliers in Pune district.

Excise officials have personally served notices to these entities under Section 168 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). The FDA has also been requested to audit the transaction records of methanol suppliers to ensure no leakages occur into the illegal liquor market, warning of stringent action against violators.

Public appeal

State Excise Superintendent Atul Kanade urged citizens to stay away from illegal country liquor and appealed to the public to report information regarding illegal liquor manufacturing or trade through the department`s toll-free helpline, 1800-233-9999, or landline 020-26127321.

He said the identity of informants would be kept strictly confidential.

Police and fire brigade teams, aided by neighbours, used ladders and ropes to bring them down.

The incident occurred around 8 A.M. near Khalsa Chowk in the Lasudia area. The fire started in the EV showroom located on the ground floor of the apartment complex.

Residents sleeping in flats above woke up when their rooms filled with smoke and they began experiencing breathing difficulties.

With flames rising from below, the exit route was blocked and residents on the upper floors were unable to come down.

Hearing screams, residents of a nearby multi-story building stepped forward to help. They arranged ladders and ropes and instructed those trapped to move to the roof.

A path was created by connecting ladders between the two roofs. Ropes were tied to window frames and structural angles and tossed across. Some of the trapped individuals reached the roof of the neighbouring building using the ladders, while others descended by climbing down the ropes.

The fire did not spread to any flats, and household belongings remained safe. However, all electric two-wheelers stored in the showroom were destroyed.

Fire brigade officer Shobharam Malviya said no one was injured in the blaze.

“There were no casualties in the incident. The fire was completely brought under control within about an hour using two tankers of water,” Malviya said.

Preliminary investigations suggest a short circuit as the cause, though a detailed probe is underway.

“An investigation into the matter is underway,” he said and added that all 20 residents were rescued without injury.

Officials said timely action by locals and fire personnel prevented a major tragedy.

However, the showroom suffered extensive damage, while the residential portion of the building remained unaffected.

Speaking at the signing of two Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) at his official residence, Varsha, Fadnavis assured investors that the state government would act as a partner in their growth journey.

"The government`s role is to help create a complete industrial ecosystem in the state. Entrepreneurs should consider the government as their partner in this journey," he said.

The agreements were signed between the Maharashtra government and leading electronics manufacturing company Jabil, as well as Dubai-based RSA Global, an official statement said.

Major boost for industry and employment 

It said that the two projects together are expected to bring investments worth Rs 4,080 crore to the state and generate around 4,750 direct and indirect employment opportunities.

According to CM Fadnavis, the investments will boost industrial growth, strengthen export capabilities and improve modern logistics infrastructure in Maharashtra. He said the projects would also create high-skilled jobs and further enhance the state`s position as a preferred destination for industry.

Jabil to expand operations in Pune

As part of the agreement, Jabil will set up an Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS) expansion project in Pune.

The company plans to invest Rs 1,500 crore to manufacture 5G equipment and artificial intelligence (AI)-based networking switchgear. The project is expected to create around 4,000 direct jobs.

Jabil has been operating in Maharashtra for the past 23 years and currently employs more than 10,000 people in the state. The company`s new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility is scheduled to begin operations on June 17, 2026.

Mega logistics park to come up in Raigad

The second agreement involves the development of an Ultra Mega Logistics Park at Uran in Raigad district.

The project will be developed by RSA Logistics and Transportation Pvt Ltd on a 25-hectare site within the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) area.

An investment of Rs 2,580 crore has been proposed for the project, which is expected to create around 750 direct and indirect jobs.

The logistics park will feature modern facilities for container stacking, container washing and cleaning, repairs, handling of empty containers and storage operations.

Senior industry leaders attend event

Several senior government officials and industry representatives attended the signing ceremony.

Among those present were Industries Department Principal Secretary Dr P. Anbalagan, Industries Commissioner Deependra Singh Kushwah, Jabil Global CEO Mike Dastoor, Managing Director B. N. Shukla, Vice President Debashish Choudhury, Director Santosh Bhagwat, RSA Global Chairman Ajay Indravadan Shah, CEO Abhishek Prakash Rao and Head of Human Resources Mohan Limaye.

Waghmare is currently in judicial custody.

Special CBI Judge Ajay Gupta reserved the order after hearing submissions from Advocate Shreyas Gacche, appearing for Waghmare, and Senior Public Prosecutor Neetu Singh, representing the central agency.

Opposing the bail plea, the CBI described Waghmare as a key conspirator who allegedly obtained the leaked NEET (UG) question paper and circulated it further. The agency claimed she received money from students in exchange for access to the paper.

"We have statements from students who said that they give money for question papers," the CBI submitted before the court.

The agency further stated that it had collected witness statements and bank transaction records as part of its investigation.

Waghmare seeks bail on medical grounds, cites vertigo diagnosis

According to the CBI, Waghmare was part of a conspiracy involving Prahlad Kulkarni, a retired Chemistry teacher, to obtain and distribute the leaked examination paper. The agency alleged that Kulkarni passed on the paper through Waghmare, who in turn shared it with Pune-based Dhananjay Lokhande.

The CBI told the court that custodial interrogation of Waghmare and Kulkarni had been sought to probe the larger conspiracy, identify other accused persons, and ascertain locations where examination questions were allegedly revealed to candidates before the test.

The defence, however, maintained that Waghmare is a certified educational consultant who earned commissions by referring students to teachers and educational institutions.

Her counsel argued that no incriminating material was recovered during a two-day search of her residence and that no cash had been seized from her home.

Seeking bail on medical grounds, the defence submitted that Waghmare suffers from vertigo and had recently been hospitalised.

"I have taken medical exigency as a ground for bail. Kindly consider it," the counsel urged.

Waghmare challenges arrest, alleges unlawful detention by Pune Police

The court, however, directed the defence to file an appropriate application regarding her medical condition, observing that the jail hospital was equipped to deal with such ailments.

The defence also questioned the legality of her custody, alleging that Pune Police had kept her in unlawful detention on the instructions of the CBI. It further contended that Waghmare`s arrest was based solely on the disclosure statement of Dhananjay Lokhande and that no independent evidence linked her to the alleged offence.

According to the CBI investigation, Lokhande allegedly collected the NEET (UG) 2026 examination material from Waghmare and subsequently passed it on to co-accused Shubham Madhukar Khairnar.

On May 30, the Rouse Avenue Court had issued notice to the CBI on Waghmare`s bail plea, filed through Advocates Shreyas Gacche and Shubham Gawande.

Waghmare remains in judicial custody till June 9 following her interrogation by the CBI in connection with the alleged NEET (UG) paper leak.

The RBI Governor stated that discussions regarding polymer banknotes are still in the early stages.

He said the proposal is being evaluated and remains under consideration by the central bank.

His remarks come amid growing interest in the possibility of introducing polymer-based currency notes as an alternative to traditional paper notes.

What are polymer currency notes?

Polymer notes are banknotes made from a special plastic material rather than cotton-based paper.

Several countries, including Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and New Zealand, have adopted polymer currency due to its durability and security features.

These notes are generally more resistant to wear and tear, water damage and counterfeiting.

Potential benefits

It is believed that polymer notes can last significantly longer than conventional paper currency, reducing replacement costs over time.

They also offer advanced security features, making them more difficult to forge.

The polymer notes tend to remain cleaner and can withstand harsh environmental conditions better than paper-based notes.

RBI projects India’s GDP growth at 6.6 per cent for FY27

Meanwhile, RBI on Friday projected real GDP growth for 2026-27 at 6.6 per cent—with Q1 at 6.6 percent, Q2 at 6.3 per cent, Q3 at 6.5 per cent; and Q4 at 6.8 per cent — saying that prolonged global supply chain disruptions, volatility in global financial markets, and weather-related shocks continue to pose downside risks to the domestic growth outlook, according to the PTI.

India’s manufacturing and services PMI suggest that both sectors continue to be resilient, and business expectations are still positive, said RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra after the three-day MPC meeting.

“On the demand side, private consumption, aided by discretionary spending, has remained resilient so far. Fixed investment has also maintained its momentum despite cost pressures. Merchandise exports recorded strong growth in April 2026, notwithstanding elevated freight and insurance costs,” he noted. 

Services exports have also remained robust, reflecting sustained demand despite concerns about AI.

Malhotra, while expressing about the economic dynamics, said, “Overall, the economic situation has broadly exhibited resilience and withstood the conflict spillovers, although the impact of cost pressures is becoming visible.”

‘Inflation remains below target’

He further stated that CPI inflation remains below the target despite global shocks, as the pass-through to domestic prices has been limited. 

He highlighted, “While the baseline projections point towards headline inflation firming up towards the upper tolerance level in Q3 2026-27, the impact of the supply shock is expected to wane in Q4 onwards. The underlying inflation pressures continue to remain benign at this juncture.”

Inflation projections for FY 2026-27

The Central Bank projected CPI inflation for 2026-27 at 5.1 per cent, with Q1 at 4.2 per cent; Q2 at 5.1 per cent; Q3 at 5.9 per cent; and Q4 at 5.4 per cent. 

“Core inflation is projected at 4.7 per cent for 2026-27. These forecasts are subject to upside risks due to global supply chain disruptions, global commodity price shocks, uncertainty about the spatial and temporal distribution of the south-west monsoon and El Nino conditions. Adequate stock of food grains and satisfactory reservoir levels, however, provide some comfort,” said Malhotra, the news agency reported.

Recalling his appointment as mayor in November 2018, Hakim stated that he was initially unsure whether he could match the legacy of some of Kolkata`s most distinguished former mayors.

"When I first became mayor, I was confident about working for the city, but I never thought I could become a worthy successor to stalwarts like Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das, who once occupied this chair," he said.

Hakim submitted his resignation to KMC Chairperson Mala Roy.

His departure comes at a time when the TMC is facing organisational challenges, with several councillors resigning from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation in recent weeks.

Hakim has also handled several key ministerial portfolios in successive TMC governments in the state.

Hakim was Kolkata`s first Muslim mayor since Independence

The KMC has been under TMC control since 2010 and remains one of the party`s most significant institutional power centres.

In the civic body`s 150-year history, the mayor`s office has been occupied by several iconic figures of Bengal`s political and nationalist movement, including Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, and former West Bengal chief minister Bidhan Chandra Roy.

Hakim made history by becoming the first Muslim mayor of Kolkata since Independence.

IIT-Roorkee, which conducted the examination this year, said information circulating on social media did not accurately reflect the incident and alleged that attempts were being made to spread misinformation.

JEE (Advanced) serves as the gateway for admission to undergraduate programmes at IITs and several other premier engineering institutions across the country.

In a series of posts on X, IIT-Roorkee said, "Claims of a data breach and privacy violation affecting lakhs of JEE (Advanced) aspirants are misleading and factually incorrect. The information circulating on social media is misleading and does not accurately reflect what happened. There is an attempt at spreading misinformation, which is far from the truth."

According to the institute, certain technical interventions were carried out on an expedited basis on Tuesday to assist candidates facing difficulties in accessing admit card data and to ensure the smooth functioning of the registration process.

It said these interventions resulted in a "minimal, temporary misconfiguration" in a cloud storage component, which was identified and reported by ethical hacker Rylen Anil.

"An ethical hacker, Mr Rylen Anil, identified this misconfiguration and reported that he could access the concerned database. The issue was immediately rectified, and access to the data was restricted," the institute said.

The affected storage was in "read-only" mode, meaning no data could be edited or deleted, IIT-Roorkee said, adding that an analysis of cloud access logs confirmed that no bulk download had taken place.

"Deliberate attempts to misrepresent this technical event and undermine public trust in the examination system are deeply concerning and should be discouraged," it stated, adding, "The JEE (Advanced) team looks forward to supporting every aspirant through a smooth and secure admission process into IITs and IISc.”

Institute responded after 16-year-old researcher flagged cloud storage issue

Earlier, IIT-Roorkee had confirmed that the JEE (Advanced) 2026 results portal experienced a cloud storage configuration issue after a teenager who identifies as a cybersecurity researcher claimed that personal and examination-related details of lakhs of students were accessible without authorisation.

The clarification came after Rylen, a 16-year-old cybersecurity researcher, posted on X alleging that the public cloud storage endpoint of the results portal was accessible without authentication, exposing bulk candidate data.

On Tuesday night, the institute said the data was stored in read-only mode with no possibility of records being altered, and added that the issue was being addressed on priority.

Annamalai, having emerged as the most popular face of BJP in the run-up to Assembly elections, updated his profile on X and described himself as: “A common man in search of good politics!”

The cop-turned-politician has made it clear that he will dissociate from the conventional politics of the state and will rather focus on leading a "movement" backed by people, a move that will ‘clean up’ caste-entrenched politics in the state and also challenge the dominance of Dravidian ideology, which has remained prevalent for over five decades.

During his policing career, he earned the epithet of `Singham` owing to his unique style, and hopes to replicate the same on the political battlefield.

Some signs of this deeply harboured desire were visible during his six-year stint with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), when he undertook aggressive campaigns to expand the party’s footprint in a state, traditionally dominated by Dravidian parties for nearly five decades.

Annamalai, in his resignation letter to the BJP high command, also spoke out about the dichotomy between the common man and the elite in politics and stated that he wanted to change this notion.

“I wanted to change the notion that politics is a path only for the elite and a select few, not for the common man. I’m extremely thankful to the BJP leadership for trusting a very young and raw me with great responsibility and leadership positions,” read excerpts from his resignation letter.

He also stated that the people of Tamil Nadu have been fatigued by the general political discourse for many decades and yearned for change.

“Some positive change happened in the past decade, but they couldn’t hold their ground,” he noted.

With his formal exit from the BJP, the newbie politician will go solo in steering a campaign based on the people`s power, hoping to bring ‘major disruption’ in the state’s entrenched political system.

Annamalai’s “common man” pitch is expected to resonate with the public at large, an experiment attempted in other states before; however, how this will pan out in the absence of any organised structure and well-oiled party machinery is yet to be seen.

According to official letters issued by the party, action has been taken against Sahebrao Kamble, candidate from the Yavatmal constituency, and Shailesh Agrawal, candidate from the Wardha–Chandrapur–Gadchiroli constituency.

The letters, signed by Senior Vice-President Ganesh Patil on behalf of Maharashtra Congress chief Harshwardhan Sapkal, state that both candidates were nominated by the party but later “kept the leadership in the dark” and withdrew their nominations, causing organisational difficulties.

Terming the conduct as serious indiscipline, the party said they had acted against organisational interests and were expelled with immediate effect.

The decision has been communicated to district Congress committees in Yavatmal, Wardha, Chandrapur, and Gadchiroli.

The party said the move was aimed at enforcing discipline during the legislative council election process and preventing similar incidents in future.

Tatkare slams Raut over claims of horse trading for council seats; dubs charges baseless, imaginary

Maharashtra National Congress Party (NCP) chief Sunil Tatkare on Friday dismissed as “baseless and imaginary” the allegations levelled by Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) leader Sanjay Raut that money changed hands to secure unopposed victories in the Maharashtra Legislative Council Elections, news agency PTI reported.

On Friday morning, Raut took to X to say that the “scramble” for unopposed elections and the drama of withdrawals on Thursday for that purpose cost at least “Rs 150 crore in a single day”.

“The opposition party’s horses themselves came to the market in Maharashtra, having set their own price for this -- there’s an enormous amount of money involved,” he said in the post.

Elections to 16 legislative council seats from local self-government bodies and a bypoll from the Nagpur local self-government body are scheduled for June 18, and votes will be counted on June 22.

The Mahayuti is set to win five of the 17 seats unopposed in this month’s council elections, as opposition candidates in these constituencies withdrew their nominations before the deadline ended on Thursday. The ruling alliance also successfully persuaded rebels to back down on the last day of withdrawal of nominations.

Talking to reporters on the charges, Tatkare said, “The allegations of money being involved in opposition candidates withdrawing from the fray are baseless, imaginary and without any substance. Making such unfounded allegations has become Sanjay Raut’s habit, and he has once again demonstrated it.”

The senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader claimed that Opposition leaders had accepted defeat even before the legislative council elections.

The incident took place at 1.08 am when excavation and pipe-laying work was being carried out by the Public Works Department (PWD) using a JCB and a Hydra machine, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Hemant Tiwari said.

Dawa Sherpa, 52, was last seen around May 29 while descending Everest after guiding a Polish climber. Although his client safely reached base camp, Dawa never arrived, raising fears about his fate.

The climbing season had just ended and Dawa with his client were among the last people on the mountain as climbing routes were being dismantled.

Family had already begun funeral rituals

The family had already lost hope after days without any information. Dawa’s teenage daughter, Mendo Lhamu Sherpa, said they were on the second day of funeral rituals.

Then came an unexpected phone call.

His wife, Damu Sherpa, said they first learned he was alive through local news reports and a phone call from someone they knew

"We were very happy to hear the news, we had given up hope," said his wife, Damu Sherpa. "We also began puja yesterday." His daughter, Mendo Lhamu Sherpa, said the family initially struggled to believe the news. "At first we were not sure if it was him," she said.

"But they sent us photos to confirm and then I was happy," reported AFP.

Found crawling near base camp

Hope returned on Thursday morning when Dawa Sherpa was found alive near Everest Base Camp after being missing for nearly a week. Known among climbers by the nickname "Hillary"—a tribute to legendary mountaineer Edmund Hillary, was spotted by members of the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC).

The SPCC team was working on its annual task of removing ropes, ladders and waste left behind after the climbing season when they spotted him crawling through the snow near the Khumbu Icefall, close to Everest Base Camp.

"He was found by a team of SPCC this morning close to the base camp — he was crawling down," said Pemba Sherpa of 8K Expeditions, which coordinated rescue efforts, reported AFP.

A rescue helicopter then flew him to HAMS Hospital in Kathmandu, where his wife and daughter were waiting.

Receiving treatment in hospital

At Kathmandu`s HAMS Hospital, Dawa was admitted to intensive care, where doctors treated him for frostbite, cold-related injuries, dehydration and trauma.

"He is awake and undergoing treatment," said ICU doctor Nishant Dhakal.

"We are managing his frostbites, cold injuries, hydration and trauma. He is being further evaluated and will be in our ICU," reported AFP.

Despite spending nearly a week exposed to harsh conditions on the world`s highest mountain, doctors said he was conscious and responding to treatment.

Search efforts faced delays

Although Dawa had been missing since the previous week, there was a delay in organising a search operation. No explanation was provided for the delay.

When helicopters were eventually sent to look for him, they were unable to locate him in the vast mountain terrain. His survival remained unknown until the cleanup crew happened to spot him while working on the route.

A long and dangerous descent

Dawa was last seen near a section of the mountain known as the Yellow Band, above Camp 3, which sits at an altitude of about 7,200 meters (23,622 feet). Everest Base Camp, where climbers begin and end their expeditions, is located at around 5,300 meters (17,388 feet).

Exactly how Dawa survived and managed to descend such a significant distance remains unclear.

He works for Himalayan Traverse, a small Kathmandu-based guiding company and comes from the town of Okhaldhunga, south of Everest.

Mountaineering community calls survival a miracle

News of Dawa’s rescue quickly spread through Nepal’s mountaineering community, where many described his survival as extraordinary, reported the news agencies.

Ang Tshering Sherpa, a respected figure in the climbing community, said, “This is nothing short of a miracle surviving so many days on the mountains facing such harsh condition,” reported AP.

He added that Sherpas are known for their strength and endurance because of their upbringing in the Himalayas.

“Sherpas are built tough growing up in the mountains. If there was someone else in his place they might not have survived,” he said, as per the news agency.

According to officials, fire department teams were immediately rushed to the spot after receiving information about the incident. The society falls under the jurisdiction of the Sector 113 police station.

No casualties reported so far

According to IANS, visuals from the site showed thick black smoke and flames emerging from the balcony of the affected flat, creating panic among residents of the high-rise complex. As per the reports, firefighters are currently engaged in efforts to bring the blaze under control.

While the exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined, no casualties have been reported so far. The officials, while discussing the situation, said that we are monitoring the situation closely.

Fire breaks out in Noida Sector 52

In a separate incident on Friday, another fire incident was reported in the Gijhor area of Noida’s Sector 52. 

Initial reports suggest that the fire started in an office situated on the ground floor of a multi-storey building, which also houses a hostel or paying guest accommodation on the upper floors.

Fire brigade teams reached the location promptly after being alerted and are actively working to extinguish the flames and prevent the fire from spreading further. The cause of this incident also remains unknown at this stage, and officials are continuing their investigation.

These incidents come shortly after a tragic fire in the national capital earlier this week. On Wednesday morning, a massive blaze engulfed the Flourish Stay hotel in the Hauz Rani area in Malviya Nagar, trapping several occupants inside. The incident resulted in the death of at least 21 people, including foreign nationals, and left several others injured.

Many of those affected were medical tourists or attendants of patients receiving treatment at nearby hospitals, including Max Hospital.

The accused later allegedly attempted to take his own life and is currently undergoing treatment in hospital.

Police have registered a murder case and launched a detailed investigation into the incident.

According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Dimple, a resident of Patiala. Both the victim and the accused were rushed to hospital in a critical condition after the incident, the news agency reported.

Doctors later declared Dimple dead due to the severity of her injuries, while the accused, identified as Harvinder Mann, also known as Harry, remains in a critical condition.

Both known to each other

According to preliminary investigations, both individuals worked for the same private company involved in packers and movers services.

Police said both had known each other for around three years and had developed a friendship during that time. However, the relationship reportedly ended some time ago, as per the IANS.

Investigators believe the accused had been attempting to reconcile with the victim following the breakup but was unable to do so.

Dispute led to alleged attack

Police said Harvinder arrived at the company premises on Thursday evening, where an argument reportedly broke out between the two, reported the IANS.

During the altercation, he allegedly attacked Dimple with a knife, inflicting multiple injuries.

The incident left other employees at the office shocked and frightened, prompting an immediate alert to the police.

Officers rushed to the scene after receiving information about the incident and transported both injured individuals to hospital.

Aman Baidwan, Station House Officer of Phase-11 Police Station in Mohali, said that the woman`s death and said her family had been informed.

He added that further legal formalities, including the recording of statements from family members, would be carried out upon their arrival.

CCTV footage and forensic evidence collected

According to police, information about the incident was received at around 7.40 pm.

A police team and forensic experts were immediately deployed to the scene to collect evidence. CCTV footage from the premises has been seized and is being examined as part of the investigation, as per the IANS.

Officials remained at the site until late in the evening and secured the area for further forensic examination.

Police are now investigating the exact circumstances surrounding the incident, including the nature of the relationship between the victim and the accused and the events that led to the attack.

Further investigation is underway.

Within a year, he was appointed Tamil Nadu BJP president, becoming one of the youngest state chiefs in the party and a prominent face of its expansion efforts in the state.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Kasaragod districts of the state.

According to ANI, Regional Fire Officer Suraj Kumar said that the team reached the spot immediately after receiving information about the leak and brought the situation under control with minimal leakage.

He added that an engineer is expected to arrive shortly to completely stop the leak.

Regional Fire Officer, while highlighting the incident, said, "We got the information about a gas leak. We reached here immediately, and on reaching the scene, we got to know that ammonia gas had leaked from a cold storage. The situation is now under control with minimal leakage. The engineer will be reaching out soon who will help stop the leak completely," as cited by ANI. 

Hemnagar cold storage facility under scrutiny 

An investigation has been launched into the licensing of the Hemnagar cold storage facility after local authorities shut down its pipelines following the gas leak and cited a critical lack of safety measures.

Saran SDM Nitesh Kumar says, "We received information of ammonia gas leak at a cold storage plant... We have come here for inspection. The main supply pipelines have been closed... Efforts were made to mitigate the situation by spraying water to help settle and filter out the ammonia from the atmosphere. The plant lacked adequate safety measures, so we will be investigating the grounds on which it was provided a license by the Agriculture Department..."

Five dead after fire breaks out at hospital in Muzzafarpur

Meanwhile, earlier, on Thursday, five people died in the fire that broke out at a private hospital in Bihar`s Muzaffarpur, while 18 patients remain hospitalised, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Tushar Kumar said.

Speaking to reporters, Kumar said the situation was now under control and that authorities were closely monitoring the condition of the injured. The SDM also noted that the compensation had already been provided to 33 affected families, while assistance to the remaining beneficiaries would be disbursed soon.
